Both teams came in expecting to dominate the other when they stepped on the gridiron to do battle. We will spotlight the top performers from Saturday night’s contest. In a game of big plays by both the Yellowjackets and Cowboys, which players rose to the occasion???
Edward Robinson RB C/O 2022 Dallas Carter
Edward Robinson is lighting in a bottle. He is a smooth runner, glides when he carries the ball, stays calm, doesn’t panic in a crowd and is a patient runner while letting the play develop. Robinson is elusive, cat quick in the open field, a wizard at eluding defenders between the tackles and has the speed to make a house call from anywhere on the field. Most defenses will have to be disciplined and play assignment football against Robinson, due to his ability to change gears in a split second. Edward should have small colleges knocking at his door to offer him, but for bigger schools to come calling, he may have to convert into a slot receiver, which wouldn’t be a difficult switch knowing how gifted of a runner he is. Improving his ball security is a must to be reliable at the next level. Against Cleburne his yardage was around the century mark. Robinson should have thousand yard season if he continues tote the load for the Cowboys.
Kobe Rivers DE C/O 2022 Dallas Carter
Kobe was a force off the edge for the Cowboys defense. Rivers has a quick first step, good bend, speed off the edge, and uses good leverage on his pass rush. Kobe set the edge for outside runs to his side and was consistently disruptive in the Yellowjacket backfield. Rivers repeatedly pressured the quarterback which lead to multiple tackles for loss. Kobe has a motor that consistently runs high, purses to the ball quickly, and makes plays from the backside using his above average speed. Roughly close to 6’0 200 lbs, he would fit perfectly as a standup rush end or linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. College coaches should definitely give Rivers a good look.
Jakourien Hooker Duncan DE C/O 2022 Dallas Carter
Rivers and Duncan combine to give Carter two disruptive bookends. Duncan was a brute force causing havoc against whoever lined up across from him offensively. He has a quick get off, uses his arms well to keep offensive lineman from engaging him easily, which makes offensive coordinators have to know his whereabouts each play. At 6’0 200 lbs, he has fluidity in his hips, lateral movement to be menace on plays run opposite of him, and delivered a few “look out!!” shots on unsuspecting ball carriers. Duncan, like his running mate Rivers, projects at the next level as a hybrid linebacker/ pass rusher.
Landry Shields QB C/O 2023 Cleburne
After leading his team to a come from behind win in week one versus Houston Heights 43-42, Shields jumped on my radar. Landry had four touchdown passes against Heights which lead to my trip to Cleburne. Shields is a gun slinger, not afraid to throw into tight windows and has touch on his deep ball. Landry the hit Carter secondary with deep ball with accuracy to his favorite target Jason Pugh. Shields moves well in the pocket, and throws well rolling to his left with accuracy, which can be a challenge for young right handed quarterbacks. Landry is mobile on the run and has the power to be affective inside the red zone, as he accounted for two touchdown runs. As Shields continues to develop and mature I see his stock rising.
Jason Pugh WR C/O 2022 Cleburne
Pugh was the biggest surprise!!! Jason has the speed to consistently get open, which was on display when Shields dialed up the bomb on three occasions for long touchdowns. He made several over the shoulder catches under tight coverage, which says he tracks the ball in flight very well. His deceptive speed had DBs guessing all night. He’s a gritty wideout, brings toughness to the Yellowjackets offense and should make the position switch at the collegiate level and develop into a mismatch for box safeties and linebackers. Colleges should definitely get eyes on him. Division II and NAIA clubs should take drive to Cleburne and look up Pugh.
Daniel Villegas OL C/O 2022 Cleburne
Daniel is a physical blocker in the run game. Villegas has nimble feet at 6’2-6’3 280 lbs, pulls with ease, when Daniel gets hands on a defender, he is strong at the point of attack. His shuffle step in his pass protection is good, and displayed good technique against a fierce Carter pass rush. Carter has two next level defensive ends who won some of the battles against Daniel, but he showed grit, confidence and toughness by competing until the whistle in blown. Collegiately, he could line up at a the guard position and develop into a solid player.
Max Bigham DL C/O 2022 Cleburne
Max is undersized as a nose tackle/ three- technique along the Cleburne defensive line. He’s uses great leverage, has violent hands, a non stop motor, flows from sideline to sideline and consistently made effort plays. They called his name all night on tackles for loss, and he accounted for several sacks, as well a fumble recovery. He caught my eye and made a lasting impression with his tenacity. It’s not the size of the dog, but how much fight he has in him. Small colleges could use this disruptive type of player who gives max effort.
Keon Long DB C/O 2022 Cleburne
Long had pick six where he showed his elusiveness. Keon turned up field quickly thru Carter tacklers after his interception, and left defenders reaching for air. Long had several pass break ups against the speedy, athletic Cowboy wideouts. Keon also had the ability to play on both sides of the ball, which was on display when turned into an offensive threat when he got his hands on the ball.
