Walter Johnson vs Northwest
This is the game of the week as two of the top teams in the county will battle for playoff seeding. Walter Johnson has looked very good and gave Quince Orchard some problems. Northwest has coasted through the first four weeks but Walter Johnson could be their toughest test yet.
Walter Johnson player to watch: Will Gardner – Coming into the season Gardner had big expectations as many believed he was the best quarterback in the county. He has met those expectations and is on route for all all-county season. Northwest has one of the top secondaries in the county so if Gardner can show up this week, he is as good as advertised.
Northwest player to watch: Daryl Harper – Harper had big expectations when he transferred from Richard Montgomery and he has met those expectations. He is one of their top playmakers on the offensive end expect him to continue to have explosive plays for this Jags offense.
Seneca Valley vs Quince Orchard
Seneca Valley has had a resurgence and is looking good with a 3-1 start. Quince Orchard has been dominant as always and is currently undefeated. This will be a good measuring stick game for both teams.
Seneca Valley player to watch: Tylek Bright – Bright has been dominant in every game he has played in thus far. Now he will have to face a stacked Quince Orchard team. If Bright can continue to be dominant on both sides of the ball against this Quince Orchard team, his name will become more of a household name.
Quince Orchard player to watch: Seydou Kamara – Kamara is a swiss army knife for this QO defense. Seneca runs a spread offense but also has the ability to have a successful power run game. Kamara will be key for QO in stopping Seneca’s spread and power run game.
Blair vs Blake
Blair has had a couple of down seasons but they look like they are back on the rise with a strong 3-1 start. A win here could solidify their status as a contender. A win for Blake would put them on a winning record and could set them up well for the 2nd half of the season.
Blair player to watch: Kendell Anderson – Johnson has quietly put up big numbers so far. He is a big quarterback that is able to make throws while getting hit. He also has the ability to get out of the pocket and make throws on the run. Johnson has a big arm and he may have to use it against Blake.
Blake player to watch: Dre’quan Smith – Coming off a record-breaking performance Smith is probably high on confidence. He will look to build on last week’s performance by having another big game on the ground. He has the power, vision, and speed to have another big day, but Blake has a tough defense.
Clarksburg vs Churchill
Clarksburg is coming off a big upset win against Urbana. A win here would give Clarksburg their first winning record in a few years. Churchill is 3-1 with a very close loss to Walter Johnson. Churchill has an elite defense and they can get another win that could set them up well for the rest of their playoff run.
Clarksburg player to watch: Kentrell Newby – Clarksburg felt Newby was going to be a really important player for them going into the year. They were right as he has developed into a star for this Clarksburg team. He is the best perimeter player on the team and he will need to have a big game if they want to keep their win streak alive and upset Churchill.
Churchill player to watch: Jaden Selby – Selby has been Churchill’s best offensive player. He is making a real push for being known as the top quarterback in the county. Look for him to try to make a lot of plays against this Clarksburg defense.
Watkins Mill vs Damascus
Watkins Mill has struggled so far this season but so has Damascus. This is a big game for both teams as a win for either of them could change the tide of their season.
Watkins Mill player to watch: Devin Brackenridge – Brackenridge is a big-time player and a leader on this Watkins Mill team. On the defensive of the ball, he plays fast. He comes downfield hard and can make plays in the run game. He will be key in trying to stop Damascus’s run game.
Damascus player to watch: Dillon Dunathan Dillon Dunathan 6'2" | 230 lbs | LB Damascus | 2023 State MD – Dunathan has been a superstar for Damascus. Damascus is used to having multiple stars on their team but Dunathan is the only guy that has stood out as an elite player. He will have a big game on the ground on offense. He will also make a ton of plays in the backfield on the defensive side of the ball.
