Friday night of Week 3 of Missouri high school football was another fun night of action with several notable performances and big victories, including Holt and Kirkwood emerging victorious games that pitted unbeaten rivals.
Here is a quick look at some of the top performances from St. Louis area games on Friday...
<strong>QB [player_tooltip player_id="37580" first="Cooper" last="Brown"], 6-3, 200, Holt, 2022</strong>
Brown came up big against rival Timberland and added to his impressive resume by leading the Indians to a 27-20 victory. Brown completed 22 of 30 passes for 260 yards and four touchdowns and one interception. Brown’s favorite target was senior wide receiver <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="37652" first="Jackson" last="Smith"]</strong>, who caught 11 passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Holt senior WR <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="96181" first="Colin" last="Bunner"]</strong> returned from an injury to catch four passes for 55 yards and a score. Holt is 4-0 and the return of Bunner, who had 32 catches for 765 yards and scored 14 touchdowns a year ago, makes them even better.
<strong>WR [player_tooltip player_id="179088" first="Austin" last="Carson"], 6-2, 185, Winfield, 2022</strong>
Carson had a career game in Winfield’s 50-0 win over visiting St. Charles West. He caught five passes for 197 yards and four touchdowns and added an interception and a return touchdown. Through four games, Carson has 14 catches for 369 yards and five touchdowns and also two return touchdowns. Winfield is now 3-1 after going 0-10 a year ago.
<strong>QB [player_tooltip player_id="200063" first="Wade" last="Ellison"], 5-10, 190, Winfield, 2022</strong>
Like his teammate, Carson, Ellison also had a career day in the win over St. Charles West. He completed 12 of 20 passes for 277 yards and five touchdowns. Through four games, Ellison has completed 60 percent of his passes for 725 yards and 14 touchdowns (against two interceptions). He has also scored three touchdowns.
<strong>ATH [player_tooltip player_id="176224" first="Romano" last="Gines"], 5-9, 150, Hazelwood West, 2022</strong>
Gines was all over the field in Hazelwood West’s 55-26 loss against visiting Oakville. He rushed six times for 153 yards and a touchdown and caught three passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns. He also added 11 tackles, which tied for the team high with <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="171968" first="Jayvion" last="Brock"]</strong>.
<strong>RB [player_tooltip player_id="101709" first="Jake" last="Hnilo"], 5-11, 185, Lindbergh, 2023</strong>
Hnilo had a career game in Lindbergh’s 47-7 win against visiting Webster Groves. He carried 14 times for 150 yards and four touchdowns (<a href="https://www.hudl.com/video/3/12812255/6145f6933863ae0b84a8ae78">HUDL highlights</a>) and has 274 yards rushing the past two games while averaging 7 yards per carry.
<strong>QB [player_tooltip player_id="103098" first="Payton" last="Hoker"], 5-11, 185, Fort Zumwalt North, 2022</strong>
Hoker, [player_tooltip player_id="194998" first="Chris" last="Reckel"] and [player_tooltip player_id="37744" first="Dewayne" last="Jones Jr"] led the Panthers to their first win of the season with a 56-7 road victory at Washington. Hoker completed six of 10 passes for 263 yards and four touchdowns. Reckel, a senior listed as a quarterback and defensive back, rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns on three carries, caught a 69-yard touchdown reception and also recovered a fumble. Jones, a junior RB-LB, returned a kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown and also recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a score.
<strong>QB [player_tooltip player_id="203653" first="Louis" last="Kavanaugh"], 6-3, 175, Kirkwood, 2022</strong>
Kavanaugh came up big as Kirkwood defeated Ladue 34-18 in the Pioneers’ first big test of the season. The senior quarterback completed 13 of 17 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns. (<a href="https://www.hudl.com/video/3/11091508/6146606a664b2d0bc0155dfa">HUDL highlights</a>) Junior <strong>WR [player_tooltip player_id="207488" first="Tyler" last="Macon"]</strong> caught four passes for 119 yards and three touchdowns. RB<strong> [player_tooltip player_id="37714" first="Deion" last="Brown"]</strong> rushed 27 times for 144 yards and two touchdowns.
<strong>RB [player_tooltip player_id="203623" first="Damien" last="Moore"], 6-0, 180, Oakville, 2023</strong>
Moore had a career day against Hazelwood West, rushing for 198 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries. Teammate <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="203617" first="Ethan" last="Venable"]</strong>, a sophomore, carried 12 times for 193 yards (HUDL highlights). He is a 6-foot-2, 220-pound athlete (running back, tight end, defensive end) who also wrestles and plays lacrosse and rugby. He’s going to emerge as a good prospect in the 2024 class.
<strong>RB [player_tooltip player_id="96150" first="Dayshawn" last="Welch"], 5-10, 175, Park Hills Central, 2022</strong>
Welch had a dominant performance in Park Hills Central’s 70-0 win against visiting Cuba. He carried six times for 168 yards and five touchdowns, giving him nine touchdowns in two days and 13 in the past three. He has rushed for 671 yards on 48 carries, a remarkable average of 14 yards per carry, through the first four games of the season.
