As the season continues, these players will either move up or down based on their continued performances.
1. Preston Alford Preston Alford 5'11" | 190 lbs | RB Dripping Springs | 2022 State TX (SR-ATH) – Dripping Springs High School (Dripping Springs, TX)
2021 Season: 453 rushing yards, 9 rushing touchdowns, 1 receiving touchdown
Alford had yet another solid week and has started off the season with just about as perfect as it can be. Alford has already almost reached 10 rushing touchdowns for the season already, and at this rate, it is tough to say where his final stats will be, but it is safe to say Alford is amongst the best in not just Central Texas but the entire state as well.
2. Mason Shorb Mason Shorb 6'3" | 175 lbs | QB Rouse | 2023 State TX (JR-QB) – Rouse High School (Leander, TX)
2021 Season: 816 passing yards, 10 passing touchdowns, 0 interceptions, 2 rushing touchdowns
In terms of quarterback play, Shorb is also on track for a perfect season, already almost having 1,000 passing yards. Even more so, Shorb has not thrown a single interception but 10 touchdowns. The junior quarterback is on track for an amazing season and he added onto his rushing stats since the previous week as well. Shorb is both accurate and has a cannon of an arm and it will be fun to watch him as the season continues.
3. Re’Shaun Sanford Re’Shaun Sanford 5'7" | 155 lbs | RB Harker Heights | 2023 State TX II (JR-RB) – Harker Heights High School (Harker Heights, TX)
2021 Season: 367 rushing yards, 4 rushing touchdowns, 1 receiving touchdown, kickoff-return for a touchdown
Sanford had another incredible week, this time adding onto his special teams stats with a 92-yard kickoff-return for a touchdown. Sanford is much like Alford and Shorb in that he is essentially unstoppable. It is especially hard to make an open-field tackle against him when he is already charging down the field.
4. Colin Page (SR-RB) – Anderson High School (Austin, TX)
2021 Season: 361 rushing yards, 5 rushing touchdowns, 16 receptions, 232 receiving yards, 2 receiving touchdowns
Page has flown up the rankings simply because of his stats against Rouse, which is a playoff team and is a favorite for a deep run this year. Page could not be stopped against a defense that pretty much shut down Burnet. He scored four rushing touchdowns and rushed for 220 yards. Although, Page did not stop there but had nine receptions for 136 receiving yards and one touchdown. Page had essentially the perfect game against a good team last week.
5. Derrick Warren (SR-RB) – Jarrell High School (Jarrell, TX)
2021 Season: 360 rushing yards, 7 rushing touchdowns, 4 receptions, 109 receiving yards, 3 receiving touchdowns
The small town of Jarrell has a big rising star in Warren. His scoring is up there with the others on this list but Warren also made sure to take advantage of excellent blocking by his teammates, never squandering any opportunity made. His ball-carrying vision also added to his performance, making him see any lanes to the endzone that he could take, and has done so on the ground and through the air.
6. Jalen Becerra (SR-WR) – Rouse High School (Leander, TX)
2021 Season: 14 receptions, 311 receiving yards, 4 receiving touchdowns
While Page had an excellent game for Anderson, Becerra was electric for Rouse on the receiving end. He scored three touchdowns and had over 200 yards receiving. Becerra has emerged as Shorb’s favorite target and given how well Becerra has performed in these two games, it should be interesting to watch the dynamic between Becerra and Shorb as the season continues.
7. Trayvian McCoy-Gay (SR-RB) – Round Rock High School (Round Rock, TX)
2021 Season: 396 rushing yards, 5 rushing touchdowns
McCoy-Gay did not have as big of a performance that he had on the first week of the season, but he is still amongst the best in Central Texas as he did have another good performance last week. He was one of the main driving forces for moving the ball down the field for the Round Rock offense and although sophomore quarterback Mason Cochran had more scoring opportnities, McCoy-Gay will more than likely see scoring opportunities in the future. McCoy-Gay is one to keep an eye on the rest of the season.
8. Ethan Moreno (JR-WR) – Lampasas High School (Lampasas, TX)
2021 Season: 94 rushing yards, 1 rushing touchdown, 14 receptions, 283 receiving yards, 5 receiving touchdowns
Moreno has been doing work for Lampasas both on the ground and through the air and given Lampasas’ high-scoring offense reputation, Moreno will likely continue to get opportunities for the rest of the season. His scoring opportunities should not lessen especially as he continues to build a dynamic with his quarterback, junior Dylan Sanchez.
9. Jesse Leija (JR-RB) – Fredericksburg High School (Fredericksburg, TX)
2021 Season: 366 rushing yards, 5 rushing touchdowns
10. Drake Torno (SR-DL) – Liberty Hill High School (Liberty Hill, TX)
2021 Season: 12 total tackles, 9 solo tackles, 7 tackles for a loss, 4 sacks, 1 forced fumble
Liberty Hill is pretty much known for its rushing offense and its defense. Torno is making sure that reputation continues, adding four sacks to his season already while also getting seven tackles for a loss. Future opposing offenses are going to have to make changes to make sure Torno can not cause any more disruption than he has already.
