An anticipated top-25 matchup on Thursday night to open the season turned into a statement of intent by the 10th ranked Mustangs of Blue Valley North, as they overwhelmed 25th ranked Bishop Miege 51-24. Scoring touchdowns on the first 5 drives, BVN quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="35554" first="Henry" last="Martin"] was absolutely surgical, while showcasing an arsenal of weapons that goes a lot deeper than star receiver, Mizzou commit [player_tooltip player_id="89200" first="Mekhi" last="Miller"]. The lopsided final score, however, was more a testament to how good the Mustangs have a chance to be, as they faced a quality opponent with star power of their own.

[player_tooltip player_id="35554" first="Henry" last="Martin"], QB Blue Valley North (24-33/352/5TD)
The numbers do not tell the whole story in regards to what made the senior QB’s performance so impressive to watch. With the Stags rolling coverage over to [player_tooltip player_id="89200" first="Mekhi" last="Miller"] early and often, Martin did a masterful job of spreading the ball around, completing passes to 7 different receivers. He was also under more pressure than the ease at which he moved the ball would suggest, but there were moments in which his ability to manipulate the pocket and keep his eyes downfield looked to be on an unteachable level, with pocket movement that appeared nonchalant at times in the way he set up oncoming rushers and remains in complete control.
[player_tooltip player_id="113287" first="Cole" last="Stratton"], WR Blue Valley North (9/152/2TD)
Simply put, Stratton was unguardable Thursday night, displaying not only precision, but some legitimate, one-on-one coverage destroying juice, to the tune of 17.3 yards per reception. The level of detail in his routes was what you dream of as a receivers coach, and on multiple occasions his subtle shoulder dips and head fakes completely froze opposing DBs. He is a complete receiver prospect, and it is the explosion he can now create coming out of his breaks that should put him on a Division 1 roster next fall. If opposing defenses continue to leave their DBs on islands with him so they can put numbers around [player_tooltip player_id="89200" first="Mekhi" last="Miller"], he will rip them to shreds all season long.
[player_tooltip player_id="155121" first="Ty" last="Farrington"], LB Blue Valley North (4 Sacks)
The 6’0 212 senior linebacker was everywhere during the season opener. As his offense built a sizeable lead, Farrington pinned his ears back and attacked, showing a devastating downhill burst that allowed him to set up shop in the Bishop Miege backfield for a dominant second-half performance. Defensive coordinator Derek Wilson puts him in positions to wreak havoc by moving him around the formation. Possessing a subtle and explosive burst, and smooth acceleration, whether attacking the A-gap or coming screaming around the edge, he is extremely difficult for blockers to get any substantial contact on.

Other Standouts

While Bishop Miege’s star defensive end (Prep Redzone Sr DL2) [player_tooltip player_id="35541" first="Collin" last="Williams"]’ box score numbers don’t stand out, the amount of attention he received from his opponent was eye-opening in and of itself, as the Mustangs rarely allowed him to be blocked one-on-one. When he was blocked one-on-one on drop-back passes, almost every one of those snaps resulted in a pressure.
Mustangs RB/WR [player_tooltip player_id="89245" first="Lucas" last="Bullock"] (Prep Redzone Sr ATH8) was a formidable presence with the ball in his hands, tallying 7 yards per carry and 13 yards per reception gained mostly after the catch. Bullock has a scary burst for his size, and the power to blast through tacklers when he gets a head of steam.
The Stags boast two offensive weapons in RB Jayden Burch (Unranked Sr RB) and WR [player_tooltip player_id="126704" first="Rohan" last="Putz"] (Prep Redzone Jr WR2) that showed why they have a chance to be one of the most dangerous combos in the state this season, and were particularly impressive in their team’s opening drive of the second half, combining for all of Miege’s 75 yards on just 5 touches. Both are dangerous and aggressive runners with the ball, that can eat up yards in a hurry.
