The temperature might be dropping, but don’t think for a second that the talent across the Dakotas is dropping, cause it certainly is not. We now enter Week 5 as we identify our first eight Big Dogs of the Week from North Dakota and South Dakota. Have a nominee you want to send us? Feel free to reach us via email at Nate@PrepRedzone.com to nominate a teammate, player, etc. so we can press the gas on giving these Dakota boys more exposure! Part I of Week 5 starts now.
NORTH DAKOTA:
Michael Rostberg | Quarterback | Fargo Shanley (ND) | 2023
Stat Line: 26-42, 301 yards, two touchdowns
Rostberg showed some great poise in the Deacon’s tough loss over on the road against Bismarck St. Mary’s. His demeanor in the pocket showed a young man that looked calm even under extreme duress. There is a lot to take in about Michael’s arm strength, as he can fire like an unleashed cannon especially on shorter throws. His quick release shows a prospect to me that I believe has a next-level skillset as the door is wide open to contact 2023 prospects as Rostberg is one of the top QB targets in the class out of the Fargo Area.
Peyton Arndt Peyton Arndt RB Bismarck Century | 2023 State | Running Back | Bismarck Century (ND) | 2023
The more I watch the tape on Peyton Arndt Peyton Arndt RB Bismarck Century | 2023 State , the more I want to watch more. Arndt is a really smooth runner between the tackles and runs with patience. He also makes really effective cuts that sell his footwork really well. There is also a lot to like from his game tape last week the way he sells the run when the ball is not in his hands, which is another key skill set he showed last week against Dickinson. He shows an explosive burst when he’s got numbers past the secondary. Will be a significant jumper when our Class of 2023 rankings comes out in October, as he’s on pace for nearly 18 touchdowns this season in North Dakota’s largest division.
Garrin Sattler Garrin Sattler TE GFRed River | 2022 State | Linebacker/Fullback | Grand Forks Red River (ND) | 2022
After watching Sattler’s tape against Fargo South, it’s hard for me to determine why this young man is not getting more attention. Garrin plays with a high grit level on both sides of the ball for the Roughriders, as he’s physical at linebacker as he is at fullback. He shows a good shoving ability on his way to attacking the ball carrier. At fullback, he’s a rumble for yards and can pound the rock inside between the tackles or hit the outside edges with good speed. He is a patient runner that eats up the gaps his linemen give him. Sattler is a fighter for yards after contact from what I could see against Fargo South. I really think he is due for a college football opportunity before the end of the season, as there’s a lot to like about his tape as a Preseason All-Stater on both ends of the ball in 11A.
Brady Lettenmaier | Running Back | LaMoure/Litchfield-Marion (ND) | 2023
Stat Line: Three rushing touchdowns.
Lettenmaier is a “first look” prospect here on Prep Redzone Dakotas. He shows great speed between the tackles as his Loboes offensive line opened up some massive holes against Richland. He is a one-cut back that can create separation at a strong level. His footwork also slides well when he needs to make quicker turns. Lettenmaier shows off all of his burst in the open field on his 64-yard run (must watch the clip below) where he blew by the Colts defense and shows great stamina on the end of his runs.
South Dakota:
Ryan Krog Ryan Krog QB Elkton-Lake Benton | 2023 State | Quarterback | Elkton-Lake Benton (SD) | 2023
Stat Line: 15-20, 350 passing yards, five touchdowns.
Krog broke not one, but two Elkton-Lake Benton school records (yards and touchdowns) in this week’s win over Deubrook. I really enjoyed watching Ryan’s impressive touch he had on the football whether he was making the shorter throw or the deep ball. The placement he puts on the football allows his wide-outs to craft their own ball to get the football, which I love to see out this junior QB. He also showed off solid precision allowing the Elks wide receivers to grab & go with little to no slowdown. A fun QB small school prospect to watch as he finishes his season and checks into his senior season.
Marshall Voeltz Marshall Voeltz WR Belle Fourche | 2022 State | Running Back/Linebacker | Milbank (SD) | 2022
Stat Line: 118 rushing yards, 9 tackles, and one sack.
Voeltz was another nominee for our big dogs of the week from the Milbank Bulldogs. It was a defensive battle against Madison, but Voeltz carried his workload to over 100 yards in a game that had a total of 9 points between both sets of Bulldogs in Week 5. I couldn’t find any recent game tape from Voeltz, but in the clips, I did find I can see easily how this kid can be a factor offensively. He’s a downhill runner that eats up contact and is a prospect if he gets out of reach, he will show a solid burst in the open field. He shows why he nearly had double-digit tackles against Madison, as this young man is a flyer to the football at linebacker and loves to crash the inside hash and can use his speed to get in front of the line of scrimmage.
Brock Longville Brock Longville 6'3" | 220 lbs | DL Brookings | 2022 State | Defensive End | Brookings (SD) | 2022
Stat Line: N/A
Longville had a very impressive outing against the Watertown Arrows last weekend. Brock showed a strong reach to get his hands around the ball carrier with ease. He looks to be faster on his feet coming off the edges based on what I see now from last year’s tape. He also shows good lateral movement on the move of his blocks. Longville shows quick footwork on the offensive line and has a must-watch pancake from last week that the college coaches out there are going to want to see. He’s well-deserving of more college football attention in the Northern Sun Conference in my eyes.
Sam Kooima | Quarterback | Deadwood-Lead (SD) | 2024
Stat Line: 312 all-purpose yards, four touchdowns. Defense: 12 tackles, 6 tackles for a loss, 1 sack.
Kooima was a big-time gamer in the Goldiggers win over neighboring Hill City as he rallied for over 300 all-purpose yards all over the football field. Watching some of the game films from this one, Kooima plays with tempo from start to finish. He moves off the snap very quickly and has some stellar skillsets I enjoyed watching. He sells the run well without the ball in his hands. When he’s in the open field this young man has a lot of untapped speed along the sidelines. He doesn’t give up on the play either as a QB as I love watching this kid try and hit some blocks for his ball carrier. His footwork has a good flex in his hips and will only get better as he develops more elusiveness on the run. After watching the game tape, I think we found a diamond in the rough sophomore to watch out of Deadwood-Lead.
Game Tape to follow!
