Continue ReadingIt goes without being said that East Coweta and Whitewater High School have always found each other to be worthy foe. The underrated competition between these two teams dates back to the early 2010’s, in which they would compete during scrimmages, and even regular season match-ups. Regardless of what the occasion was, these two teams always manage to show out against each other. This time around, the Indians managed to come out on top, as they won the match-up 41-24. In a season where the Indians are expected to have a shot at their own fair share of success in the playoffs, this can be seen to be a very good sign, and even some momentum in which they can ride into the rest of the season.
In this game, East Coweta showed control of the game on both sides of the ball. To start, on defense, the Indians limited the Wildcats to 24 points, and multiple players recorded over 7 tackles. This included the likes of Keelan Kornegay, Makai Sullivan, Deliyon Freeman, and Cosby Ellis. In addition to this, both Kaleb Harris and Makai Sullivan snagged themselves an interception, only adding to the dominance that the defense displayed. Brandon Johnson also had his own fair share of success, as he recovered a fumble, proving that the Indians were going to take advantage of any opportunity to take the ball away that would present itself. Because the Indians have a bit of a tougher schedule ahead, their fans can only hope that they keep this up, because teams such as Norcross, Collins Hill, and McEachern will not be losing the ball as easily.
Perhaps what was most exciting about the Indians win against the Wildcats was the way that the offense continued to have it’s way. In the passing game, Daniel Schoch showed why he is one of the better QB’s to come out of the program in years as he threw for 207 yards, and 3 TD’s. This came from 12/19 passes, in which his QB Rating was also very impressive. Those who benefited the most from his success in the passing game included that of Colt Cortez, Amariyon Moss, and Dionte Jones. Each of them caught a TD, and totaled more than 45 yards. To add to this, the Indian’s running game was also very impressive, as they finished the day with 175 yards on the ground. This largely came from Trey Bowles, who rushed for over 130 yards, and finished the game with 2 TD’s of his own. His relief, DJ Reid, also had a decent game as he ran for 37 total yards, with his longest run being 17 yards in a single gain.
As one may see, the future is bright for East Coweta moving forward. If they can continue to perform consistently on both sides of the ball, while also creating turnovers, it is very likely that they will have a successful season. Moving forward, we expect them to capitalize on the things that made them successful during week 1, while also being able to prepare for the more difficult opponents that they are very likely to face.
