From the Grand Strand to the greater Pee Dee to the Lowcountry, five players stood above the crowd with their performances. There’s a defensive lineman, two receivers, an all-star defender showing out at running back and a future NCAA Division-1 tailback.
Alvin Wilson, Beaufort
The big Eagles’ defensive lineman had a strong showing against Effingham County (Ga.), heaping Beaufort to a 24-3 victory. Wilson had three tackles for loss and a pair of sacks and eight overall tackles. With so much focus on fellow lineman Eamon Smalls Eamon Smalls 6'3" | 300 lbs | DL Beaufort | 2023 TX , Wilson will likely be the beneficiary time and again this year.
Davion Joyner/Marion Mitchell, Fort Dorchester
These two players essentially took turns pairing up with quarterback Zolten Osborne Zolten Osborne 6'2" | 205 lbs | QB Fort Dorchester | 2023 State SC to carve up the Carolina Forest defense on Friday. Joyner had six receptions for 109 yards, while Mitchell had four catches for 105. What’s most impressive, though, is that all but one of Joyner’s receptions came in the second quarter (the other in the first), and Mitchell’s first three came in the third quarter with one more mid-way through the fourth.
Elijah Vereen Elijah Vereen 5'9" | 170 lbs | DB North Myrtle Beach | 2022 State SC , North Myrtle Beach
After his season-opening performance, its safe to call the senior a true two-way standout. Also a standout corner (after playing safety and linebacker a year ago), Vereen is one of two starting tailbacks this season. Against Loris, he had 13 carries for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Not bad for one of the area’s best defensive players.
Reggion Bennett Reggion Bennett 5'9" | 170 lbs | WR Trinity Collegiate School | 2022 State SC , Trinity Collegiate
Bennett may end up being a weekly consideration for this spot, as the Buffalo commitment will likely tear through most of the team’s opponents and could flirt with a 2,000-yard rushing season. Last week was no different, as Bennett ran for 168 yards, two touchdowns and two two-point conversions, completed a 38-yard pass fora touchdown and returned a kickoff 97 yards for another score.
