Traverse City West is one of the more quiet teams in the division but they feel good heading into the year. They had an up and down year last year but the Titans showed a bunch of flashes. Yes, they are replacing their starting QB, but the Titans have a good coach and some young talent to help fill the void.
<strong>2020 Review</strong>
Traverse City finished the year last year 6-3 and against Grandville in the playoffs. The Titans got hot right before the playoffs and won a game against Union where they blew them out 65-13. They turned around and got shut out against Grandville 35-0. The offense averaged 31 PPG while the defense only gave up 21 PPG. Neither are great, but decent, which is exactly what the Titans were last year.
<strong>Coaching Staff</strong>
The Titans are led by Greg Vaughn. Vaughn was hired back on March 13th of 2018. He’s been the guy since and building the program his way has been a challenge. He’s shown the ability to coach and be successful, he’s still working out some kinks. Vaughn had a very successful coaching campaign back in the mid-2010s with St. Francis where he led the Gladiators to a 63-19 record. He knows how to build championship programs and heading into 2021 he feels like the time is now.
<strong>Key Players In 2021</strong>
The Titans are going to have to replace Mason Morrison somehow. The QB, who played both offense and defense, graduated and has left a hole at those 2 spots. However, Remy Schulz is returning for his senior year. The Titans starting RB has spent his offseason lifting where he’s reportedly up to 195 lbs. He’s a good athlete with solid vision. He’s able to break tackles and make guys miss. He’s going to be the central point for the ground attack again in 2021. The offense goes as he goes and he’s ready for the challenge.]
[player_tooltip player_id="164629" first="Will" last="Gaston"] will be the other player that the Titans are relying on in 2021. Gaston is 6’4" and 210 lbs. He plays primarily WR but will turn around and play CB on defense. On offense, he’s able to go up and get pretty much any ball with ease. He’s a good athlete and has a very nice frame. He’s the leading receiver for the Titans and they will need him to step up and make the job a little bit easier on the new QB.
<strong>2021 Schedule</strong>
Traverse City West starts their season on the 26th of August at 7 PM against Midland. They are home for back-to-back weeks before they hit the road. The Titans will finish the regular season at home against De La Salle Collegiate on October 22nd at 7 PM. They are hoping to push for another playoff bid this year and take it a step further. It’s year 4 with the coaching staff that Vaughn brought in and that alone should be enough intrigue to keep people watching in 2021.
