Bible Junior Memorial Stadium in Leander, TX. Rouse now heads into the season 1-0 and with a scary-looking offense that should frighten every defense on the schedule.
1. Mason Shorb Mason Shorb 6'3" | 175 lbs | QB Rouse | 2023 State TX (JR-QB)
Shorb arguably had one of the best games of his high school career. He threw for 393 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions. He finished the game 23-31 with a completion percentage of 74.2. Shorb was almost pitch-perfect the entire game, able to throw accurate passes left and right and was even able to thread the needle between some tight coverages. On the opposite hand, he also did not miss any opportunity in blown coverages from Burnet, hitting wide-open receivers when possible. Shorb lived up to the expectations last night.
2. Calvin Daniels (JR-RB) & Marques Waldman (JR-RB)
Both Daniels and Waldman took over the reins for senior running back EJ Moore last night. Daniels rushed for 60 yards and Waldman for 54. Both backs did great in gaining yardage, with Daniels rushing an average of 6.7 yards per carry, and Waldman rushing for 9.0 yards per carry. Although Shorb stole the spotlight, the running help from these two backs did help keep the Burnet defense guessing which allowed Shorb to get big plays off of play-action. Waldman also had one rushing touchdown in the game.
3. Troy Oliver (SR-WR)
Oliver was Shorb’s favorite target last night. Oliver had seven receptions for 87 yards and one touchdown. During the game, Oliver was a tough one to tackle and was able to slip through and break a few tackles when he was given the ball. On top of that, Oliver once again showed off his speed which made him an even tougher target to tackle.
4. Quarry Simmons (SR-WR)
Oliver may have beaten Simmons in catches, but Simmons topped off the night with three receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown to boot. Simmons was one of two receivers to get a deep pass touchdown that night along with senior wide receiver Will Albrecht, who had one 65-yard reception for a score. For Simmons, his was for 63 yards. Simmons, much like Oliver, showcased his speed in the big catch especially, and once he was gone, there was no catching him. Simmons did have one fumble in the game but that luckily did not keep him down for long.
5. Jalen Becerra (SR-WR)
Becerra also had a big game, he finished off the night with five receptions for 82 yards and a score. On top of that, he also recorded six pancake blocks which is a big stat for a wide receiver. Becerra was the definition of a team player in this game, constantly blocking to the best of his ability and supporting his teammates during plays. Overall, the Rouse receivers are some of the best in Central Texas.
