San Diego historically has produced some of the top high-school talents and eventual Heisman winners at the running back position (see: Reggie Bush, Ricky Williams, Marcus Allen). Here we’ll take a look at the current crop of RBs in this area.
[player_tooltip player_id="141906" first="Lucky" last="Sutton"]- Cathedral Catholic, 2022
Sutton provides a steady and physical presence in the ground game for a strong Cathedral Catholic team. He’s a powerful downhill runner that will run through tackles and rip off long gains after contact. He’s a strong athlete at 6’1 205 lbs., who does most of his work between the tackles but has the ability to catch and run out of the backfield. Two things that stand out on his film are his vision and powerful leg drive. The combination of Sutton and QB [player_tooltip player_id="141935" first="Charlie" last="Mirer"] will be exciting to watch in Cathedral’s big games coming up at Centennial (8/27) and De La Salle (9/17). He currently holds offers from Mountain West schools Colorado St., San Jose St., and local San Diego St.

Roderick Robinson- Lincoln, 2023
Robinson was a recent San Diego Stock Riser after a big summer picking up offers from Cal, Oregon, Arizona, and SDSU. Robinson, a junior, has the physical tools and talent of a future D-1 running back. He has outstanding balance and power at 6’1 220 lbs., with the ability to run through or around defenders. His quick feet and burst in his cuts make him extremely difficult to tackle in open space. Robinson projects to be one of the best running backs in San Diego this season and will be another dangerous weapon to watch on the Lincoln offense alongside teammate and recent Oregon commit, [player_tooltip player_id="25238" first="Jalil" last="Tucker"].

[player_tooltip player_id="25345" first="Christian" last="Washington"]- Helix, 2022
Washington is an explosive playmaker that will impact the game in a variety of ways for Helix. He excels at evading tacklers in open space showing good speed and elusiveness. He’s a constant big-play threat turning the corner on outside runs, catching screens out of the backfield and returning kicks/punts on special teams. He racked up over 300 all-purpose yards and 3 tds in Helix’s week one victory over Mira Mesa and should start attracting interest from schools with more solid performances throughout the season.

[player_tooltip player_id="145237" first="Major" last="Givens"]- Steele Canyon, 2023
Givens is a talented and determined junior RB. He flashed his athleticism and raw skill as a standout at the National Preps San Diego Showcase back in February and will be a player to watch at the position this season. He’s a north-south runner with a strong lower body capable of driving through tackles. Givens currently doesn’t hold any offers but should have plenty of opportunities to put his talents on display as a focal point of Steele Canyon’s offense this season.

[player_tooltip player_id="187275" first="Thomas" last="Jones"]- University City, 2022
Jones is a tough runner between the tackles with the speed to break open big runs at the second level. He possesses an impressive combination of raw physical talent and football instincts. As a runner, he accelerates quickly through the hole and likes to lower the pads to deliver a hit. Jones so far has flown under the radar on the recruiting trail but could see a big boost to his stock with a full season of opportunities ahead of him.
