Pt. II of my series consists of the top QB's in 5A ball. Take a look: [player_tooltip player_id="42789" first="Adryan" last="Lara"], 6’2" 210lbs, Desert Edge ’22 The Washington State commit projects to put up massive numbers this fall as he’ll look to lead an explosive Desert Edge team. Lara led DEHS to the Open Division playoff in 2020, which resulted in a first round loss to Chandler. If they’re in the 5A playoff, that’s a whole different story. He’s a pro-style QB with a natural arm talent with the ability to hit throws with velocity or touch at any depth. Excellent placement and timing on all 3 levels of throws, and should be one of the top passers in the state here in 2021. [player_tooltip player_id="42798" first="Treyson" last="Bourguet"], 6’2" 195lbs, Salpointe Catholic ’22 Bourguet remains uncommitted after decommitting from Arizona back in December. He threw for over 1,000 yards and 16 TD’s in just a 7 game season in 2020. Very athletic kid with the ability to throw off-platform or throw with different arm angles. He does a great job moving and manipulating DB’s with his eyes and hits all 3 levels of throws with superb timing, velocity, and placement. Bourguet led Salpointe to an Open Division semifinals loss to Hamilton last season, and now he’ll get a shot to lead Salpointe back into the playoffs to make a run, and he’ll get a huge opportunity to draw in some much deserved attention to build on his 3 total offers. [player_tooltip player_id="42806" first="Ridge" last="Docekal"], 6’3" 210lbs, Saguaro ’22 [caption id="attachment_53672" align="alignright" width="300"] Photo: Twitter[/caption] Docekal will lead a powerhouse Saguaro program and will have a big opportunity to rise his stock here in 2021. Pro-style QB with a very good football IQ as he does a great job reading coverages and identifying mismatches pre-snap to check and audible plays at LOS. Smooth in the pocket as he stands tall and delivers with a fluid release. He throws well off play action and has shown the ability to make quick and instinctual/decisive reads. He does a great job distinguishing whether to use velocity vs touch and has continued to take big leaps each year. Docekal holds 7 offers thus far and projects to bust loose in 2021, and could potentially see some P5 attention barring he plays as expected. [player_tooltip player_id="161970" first="Hunter" last="Kronengold"], 6’4" 180lbs, Sunrise Mountain ’22 Kronengold will take over the QB1 role in 2021 after seeing action last year behind senior starter Travis Ward. He’ll have big expectations in front of him, as Sunrise comes off a 5A State Title win over Ironwood. He sizes up with good length and has flashed multiple division 1 level throws on his film. He possesses solid arm strength to stretch the field vertically, and has the ability to deliver accurate throws on a dime while on the run. Consistency is key with Kronengold. If he can be consistent with his reads and timing and take care of the ball, then he’ll have a ton of potential to put up huge numbers and be amongst 5A’s top QB’s, as we have yet to see him reach his full ability. He does not currently hold an offer. [player_tooltip player_id="162029" first="Braden" last="Wells"], 6’2" 170lbs, Notre Dame Prep ’22 Wells saw some action last season behind 2021 QB [player_tooltip player_id="42698" first="Tyler" last="Schweigert"], and flashed some solid potential to be a threat in 5A football as he heads into his senior year. NDP runs a good amount of play action, and Wells did a great job selling PA and got the ball out quick on bootlegs/rollouts. One of his best traits he’ll need to keep is his ball security. He did a good job hitting his checkdowns instead of forcing throws last season which you love to see in a young QB. He’s shown the ability to use velocity and fit throws into tight windows as well. He’s had a year to develop and will have a talented target in 2022 WR [player_tooltip player_id="42803" first="Gavin" last="Smith"], so Wells holds strong potential to bust loose during his senior campaign. [player_tooltip player_id="115515" first="Brady" last="McDonough"], 6’0" 175lbs, Desert Mountain ’24 Although this will be McDonough’s first year as the varsity starter, he put up a massive 2,810 yards and 52 TD’s at the frosh level in 2020, which earned him an offer from Arizona. He is calm and poised in the pocket and and delivers throws with good timing and placement. Very good football IQ at a young age with the ability to read coverages and find the soft spots. Playmaker ability as he can extend plays and improvise to find receivers downfield or pick up yards on his feet. He wasn’t rattled under pressure at the frosh level as he kept his mechanics and flashed very good pocket movement for a 2024 kid. Big potential for McDonough as I expect the offers to flood in for him as the season progresses.
