I attended the Ram Jamboree at Rolesville HS where eight teams participated in controlled scrimmages on August 13th. I covered the morning session which consisted of Leesville Rd. HS versus Clayton HS in the first scrimmage and Rolesville HS versus New Bern HS in the second scrimmage.
Leesville Rd: The offensive unit was able to move the ball down the field on a few series with a mixture of running plays and short passes. The highlight of the offensive unit was the play of Brock Winstead, C, 6’2" 263. Brock displayed good technique and strength once contact was made with the defender, resulting in two pancake blocks.
The defensive unit was stout and made it difficult to run against them. [player_tooltip player_id="28646" first="Beau" last="Atkinson"], DE, 6’6" 238 was very quick out of his stance to stop the play. He was difficult to block in man-coverage and was double-teamed often. [player_tooltip player_id="28646" first="Beau" last="Atkinson"] used his quickness and length to stop the ball carrier behind the line of scrimmage on several plays. Tyler Lassiter, MLB, 6’3" 215 made at least ten solo tackles. He is a high-energy player with good lateral movement and an instinct to get to the ball carrier.
Clayton: The offensive unit had a tough time moving the ball against the Leesville Rd. defense. AJ Foster, RB, 5’10" 185 showed flashes of his potential on a few runs. AJ runs with power and speed, accelerating when there was an opening to gain yards.
The defensive unit limited Leesville’s offense from being able to consistently move the ball downfield. The highlight of the defensive unit was [player_tooltip player_id="28661" first="Donovan" last="Spellman"], DE, 6’4" 215 who was very quick out of his stance. He was often unblocked as he was in pursuit of the ball carrier and rushing the quarterback. [player_tooltip player_id="28661" first="Donovan" last="Spellman"] is difficult to block in man-coverage.
Rolesville: The offensive unit was able to move the ball downfield when [player_tooltip player_id="28670" first="Byrum" last="Brown"], QB, 6’4" 195 was directing the offense. Byrum connected with [player_tooltip player_id="126936" first="Noah" last="Rogers"], WR, 6’3" 185 for a TD reception in the end zone. Byrum only played in a few series as he is preparing for the start of the season. [player_tooltip player_id="97528" first="Jesiah" last="Henderson"], OL, 6’5" 300 provided solid blocking throughout the scrimmage.
The defensive unit was able to limit New Bern offense ability to move the ball a few series. Ishawn Shoulars, DE, 6’3" 210 displayed good quickness and strength controlling the offensive lineman to stop the play.
New Bern: The offensive unit played well throughout the scrimmage, controlling Rolesville defensive unit. [player_tooltip player_id="179674" first="ZyKeem" last="Brooks"], RB, 5’10" 205 provided strong straight-line running gaining yardage throughout the scrimmage. He accelerates quickly to run past defenders for big gains. New Bern is primarily a run-oriented offense and they run the ball well.
The defensive unit was tough to move the ball against in the air and on the ground. The highlight of the defensive unit was [player_tooltip player_id="44971" first="KJ" last="Sampson"], DT, 6’4" 285 who was a disruptor to Rolesville offense. KJ was very quick out of his stance and ran past blockers to stop the play. [player_tooltip player_id="44971" first="KJ" last="Sampson"] was often double-teamed, unable to block him in man coverage. KJ was clearly the most dominant defensive player on the field.
