Owen Veltrop is entering his senior season where he looks to continue to develop as the Patriots’ top weapon on both offense and defense. Veltrop had a strong season last season, where he tallied 500 passing yards and seven touchdowns. He also scored three rushing touchdowns with an additional 280 rushing yards. Veltrop was not just a force on the offensive end of things, as he recorded three interceptions and 15 total tackles. The Patriots expect a lot out of Veltrop in his senior season, and will find a lot of success if he can continue to develop.
Derrion Boyd is a 5-foot-11, 170-pound junior for the Patriots and is expected to play wide receiver and defensive back in the upcoming season. Boyd showed a lot of promise in the shortened 2020 season where he scored five touchdowns, including a kick return. Boyd scored five times on offense, while putting up 312 total yards from scrimmage. While dynamic with the ball in his hands, it will be interesting to see how the Patriots utilize Boyd’s athleticism on the defensive end in the upcoming season. I would not be surprised to see a breakout senior season from this young man.
Pierce Bryant is a 6-0, 180-pound junior wide receiver/free safety that is expected to have a big season in 2021. His measurables are strong with a 4.6 40-yard dash and a 33-inch vertical. It will be important to show that his measurables can translate to the field, but he is poised for a strong campaign this year.
Justin Jones is a 5-10, 160-pound senior for the Patriots and is expected to continue his play as an edge rusher. He has shown a burst off of the edge in his previous experience, recording 26 total tackles, four sacks, one fumble recovery and one Interception. Jones has the potential to break out and be a dominant high school edge rusher, and is someone to keep an eye out for.
All in all, the Patriots are coming off of an exciting season, but look to improve on their success going forward. With Boyd and Veltrop returning, their offense will likely continue to improve. I am excited to see these four contribute on the defensive side of the ball, as their playmakers have the potential to win Parkway South a few games this year.
