But it’s not just running backs who have found early success on the ground. Dynamic, dual-threat QBs have made their presence known on the ground and have proved to be some of the best runners you’ll find across the peach state.
Here are three leading rushers in the peach state after week 2….
Johne’ss Davis – Athens Christian
One of the bigger, tougher backs you’ll find across the state, Davis is a powerful runner and a tackle-breaking machine in Single-A private. He doesn’t play against the best competition, so the 5-foot-11 195-pounder has no problem bowling over defenders with ease. He’s so strong on the lower body and consistently needs more than one defender to bring him down. He ended his junior season last year on a strong note and couldn’t have asked for a better start to his senior season. In his season opener, Davis rushed for 251 yards on 17 carries (14.8 ypg) and four touchdowns. In week two, Davis rushed for 199 yards on 22 carries (9 ypc) and two touchdowns. He also caught one pass for 55 yards. He’s so dangerous when running downhill and will be tough to handle for every defense he goes up against this fall. Expect him to be one of the state’s leading rushers at the end of the season.
Malachi Singleton Malachi Singleton 6'2" | 210 lbs | QB North Cobb | 2023 State GA – North Cobb
He may be a QB, but there aren’t many guys who can run like Singleton. The 6-foot-1 220-pounder has excellent speed for his size, but it’s his toughness and ability to run with power that has made him so successful. He runs with great pad level, balance, and knows how to bounce off tackles for more years. He loves contact for a QB and has no problem lowering his shoulder to brace for a hit. He can out-run defenders when he needs too, and can overpower them close to the goal-line. That’s where he’s at his best, and that’s how he was able to lead North Cobb over Milton last weekend. Singleton brought his “A” game with him in week 2, rushing for 224 yards on 29 carries and scoring 5 touchdowns. In week one, Singleton went up against an outstanding Buford team in week one where he rushed for 63 yards and one TD.
Solomon Rayton – Arabia Mountain
It’s not easy to rush for 200+ yards in a game, but Arabia Mountain ATH Solomon Rayton was able to pull it off in the first two games to start the season. He may not be thee biggest back, but he’s quick, has great footwork, and can change direction on a dime. He’s so elusive and has no problem making defenders miss in a small area. He follows his blocks well and can be tough to hit directly for most defenders. He’s a slippery runner and a threat to score every time he’s in the open field. Rayton rushed for 224 yards in the season opener and scored twice. In week two last weekend, Rayton rushed for another 202 yards and found the end-zone two times for the second straight week.
