In the 6A division, the Spartans have remained one of the most respected programs in the area. They’re coming off of another great season where they won 10 games and fell short deep into the playoffs against Westfield. That final playoff game for the Spartans was rough. They got beat 42-9 and took a thumping. They’re expecting to win a championship and that game has been on their minds since it went down.
The Spartans put up over 34 PPG last year and were moving the ball up and down the field. Defensively they had their moments of greatness or struggles. They gave up 20 PPG and had some exciting defensive stands. They won a game at home against Bishop Dwenger in triple OT 35-34.
Homestead is led by Head Coach Chad Zolman. Zolman has been coaching for 29 years and has been a head coach for 18. Zolman leads by example and the players feed off of him. He’s smart, humble, and he makes sure that his guys work hard. With Zolman, the Spartans are always legitimate championship contenders and he’s able to coach up the talent.
The Spartans are led by Nathan Anderson offensively. Anderson is a great athlete and has a nice frame. He’s 6’0″ and 175 lbs and runs a 4.48. It’s probably best to round up some on that 40, but nonetheless, it shows you how good of an athlete he is. He’s always a threat to make a huge play. They line him up all over the field and make him touch the ball in a bunch of different ways. He’s a 2-star recruit with offers from just about every local school.
The Spartans will be relying on Kyle Koob to step up big on defense. Koob has always been a player that has multiple roles for the Spartans. Now his is his time to step up. He hasn’t been a consistent starter and last year he only had 7 tackles but now he’s the oldest in the room. He starts in the heart of that defense and will be key to their defensive success. He has big shoes to fill and they’re hopeful that he will.
Homestead starts their season later this month on the road against Fort Wayne Northrop at 7 PM. They then come back home for a few weeks before hitting the road again. They finish their season at home on October 15th against Fort Wayne South Side, who we recently covered. That game could be huge for playoff implications and sectional championships. The Spartans have huge expectations and we’re so close to finding out how far they go in 2021.
