Continue ReadingHicksville is coming off of an up and down year where they had some high highs and some pretty low lows. They split the home games going 2-2 and got beat pretty bad by Fairview at home 50-7 to open their field last year. Hicksville has lost a bunch of key pieces and good players due to graduation. They’re going to be relying on some younger guys to step up.
Hicksville is led by longtime Head Coach Lucas Smith. Smith has been the guy in town for a long time, and for good reason. He’s a leader in the community on and off the field. The Aces 2020 season was their first non-winning season since 2014. They’re always a threat to win their division and with a potential talent reload they could be primed to make another run.
The Aces are without Ian Greutman and Lex Koerber have both graduated and moved on. There will be key spots to fill at the QB and RB positions. They’re going to need some of these young guys, Jackson Bergman primarily, to step up.
Bergman is expected to be the lone QB and lead the team. Last year, heading into camp, Bergman and Turnbull, who just graduated, had to duke it out for the starting QB job. This is now Bergman’s time to shine. Bergman is a very tall player and stands over the line. He’s 6’5″ and 190 lbs. He has a decent arm but very raw mechanics. He doesn’t play with great anticipation but he hasn’t played the position very long. Prior to last year, he was playing WR.
The Aces will need to have their starting RB spot filled. Last year, Kole Wertman, was the guy to rely on after he replaced Mason Commiso. Part of their struggle last year was trying to replace some of those key positions. In back-to-back years, they will be doing so. That’s not a great spot to be in, but, over 15 of their starters have varsity experience.
The Aces last year, with all of their struggles, still managed to average almost 27 ppg. The reason for that is coach Smith. It will be up to Coach Smith again this year to coach up some of these young guys. He has the experience and know-how to do so.
Hicksville starts their season with a preseason game against Bryan on the 6th. But, the regular season kicks off on the 20th at 7 pm at home against Patrick Henry. The preseason game will be a great chance for them to evaluate where they are. They are a fun and exciting team this year and I can’t wait to check them out when the time comes.
