To be fair, they started their season against Bishop Dwenger, Bishop Luers, and Northrop. That is an absolute gauntlet to start any season. They were very young on offense and the Generals think the second-year coaching staff is ready to take that jump.
Coaching Staff
The Generals are led by Sherwood Haydock. Haydock was brought in in January of 2020 to be the head coach. He has a very long track record of success and building programs the right way. He’s coming from Woodland where he spent 9 years and having a record of 42-18. He led Woodland to a deep playoff run in 2017 where they finished in the 2A Class as the title runner-up. He’s brought with him great tradition and the ability to make the changes necessary to be successful.
Key Players In 2021
Like I mentioned, the offense last year was very young. This year, however, they are hoping that Marcus Cooper is able to take the next step in his development. Cooper is only a sophomore but showed great flash for the Generals on offense last year. He’s a dual-threat QB who has a nice arm and great legs. He’s a threat to hold the ball down and make a guy miss or loft it over a defender’s head. He’s a nice size right now standing at 5’10” and 170 lbs. He’s very raw at playing the QB position. Up to this point, he’s been more athlete than QB. He runs all over, makes guys miss, and makes some good throws here and there. In 2021 I would really like to see him clean up his footwork and mechanics and become more of a passer. He has the arm, he just needs to be taught how to use it. He’s only a sophomore. He has plenty of time and he will continue to learn and grow as the years go on.
Arthur Mhoon Jr is another key player for the Generals in 2021 I would like to look at. He’s a senior and the General’s starting FS. They rely on him to seal the backend of the defense and make the sure tackle. He’s a decent athlete and he’s always able to get the job done. He’s spent his summer working in 11 on 11 camps and most recently was at a camp in Rochester. He’s putting the work in and has big expectations for himself heading into this season.
2021 Schedule
After finished 2-9 last year and only putting up 19 PPG last year the Generals are hopeful that in year 2 in the new regime they can improve on those numbers. The defense was really bad giving up over 40 PPG. The problem is when you’re the worst team in a strong division you get picked on. Last year was rough and they think they can improve on it and grow from it.
The Generals start their season with the exact same gauntlet they had last year. Bishop Dwenger, Bishop Luers, and Northrop. They kick off the year on the 20th at 7 PM against Bishop Dwenger before they hit the road for those next 2 matchups. The Generals also finish the year on a road trip in back-to-back weeks as well. They are on the road against Homestead and Carroll to close out the year. The year 2 development could be on full display by the time those games roll around. While I do expect them to struggle early in 2021, I think they’re going to be a much better football team overall in 2021.
