It got chippy on the field during this time and Columbia City was trying to intimidate Churubusco. Thankfully, everyone turned out okay and we had a gritty football game.
As expected, both offenses started slow. It was a defensive battle early in the game where both teams would punt to the other. The game’s first score came from Riley Buroff Riley Buroff 6'4" | 175 lbs | QB Churubusco | 2023 State IN rolling out to his right and finding Nick Nondorf who turned the corner, made a guy miss, ran through a tackle, and hit pay dirt to make it 6-0
Churubusco’s kicker, Rosey Stephens, was on fire last night. She has a big leg and it was fun to see because when she kicks the ball you can hear a big pop. She made the kick to go up 7-0. On the ensuing kickoff, she hit the upright on the opposite side of the field. The best part was seeing her teammates hype her up and be supportive.
Columbia City would get the ball and then drive down to the RedZone before having a turnover. On the next drive, Nick Nondorf would have a carry, take a big hit, and stay down. Nick Nondorf would never return to the game and that was it for the Churubusco offense.
The score at halftime was 7-0. Columbia City came out in the second half with a ton of adjustments and then they took over. Churubusco dealt with a lot of Taelor Robinson in the second half and they couldn’t do much to slow him and the offense down.
Columbia City went and scored 26 straight unanswered points and the sheer size of the team took over. Churubusco just ran out of gas. They were a much smaller team, in size than CC and it showed later in the game. Once Nandorf went down the energy slowed for Churubusco and they never recovered. The final score was 26-7 and Columbia City left with a hard fought win.
Next week, Churubusco hits the road and heads to Lakeland with the hope of bouncing back and coming home with a win. Nandorf coming back next week could go along way for Churubusco. Columbia City returns home and has its home opener against Delta.
