Football is finally back in the state of Alabama and there were some fantastic opening game match-ups around the area. Here are some of the top performances around the Birmingham Metro during the opening weekend of high school football.
[player_tooltip player_id="141422" first="Cade" last="OTT Carruth"] | Hewitt-Trussville QB
Curruth led Class 7A #4 Hewitt-Trussville to a huge opening game win against reigning 6A champion and #1 ranked Pinson Valley, 49-27. Carruth leads a dynamic Husky offense with recent Auburn commit [player_tooltip player_id="126083" first="Omari" last="Kelly"] and Clay-Chalkville transfer [player_tooltip player_id="127509" first="Jordan" last="McCants"] who both had great performances against Pinson Valley. Carruth went 20-28 passing with 332 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception. He added 2 touchdowns on the ground. Hewitt-Trussville will host Saraland the #13 team in 6A next Friday night.
Earl Woods | Hueytown QB
Woods was a player I highlighted in my five players to watch for Hueytown and he delivered an outstanding performance in his Hueytown debut. The junior QB competed 10 of 16 passes for 170 yards and a touchdown. He added 15 carries, 133 yards, and three touchdowns on the ground. The Minor defense had no answer for Woods and the Hueytown offense as the Gophers went on to defeat their rivals 57-14 to open the 2021 season. Hueytown will travel to face #4 Clay-Chalkville next Friday night.
Luke Reebals | Briarwood Christian RB
Senior running back Luke Reebals led 6A #5 Briarwood Christian past 4A #3 Madison Academy with 182 all-purpose yards and 4 touchdowns. Reebals totaled 11 carries, 104 yards, and 3 rushing touchdowns. He added 5 receptions for 78 yards and a touchdown. Madison Academy is a great team in Class 4A but did not have enough to hang with Briarwood as the Lions went on to win 41-17. Briarwood travels to play 7A Spain Park next Friday night.
[player_tooltip player_id="127665" first="Christopher" last="Vizzina"] | Briarwood Christian QB
Vizzina also had a huge night for the Briarwood Christian Lions in the win over Madison Academy. The junior QB was a perfect 13/13 passing for 182 yards and 2 touchdowns. He added another touchdown on the ground. The combination of Vizzina and Reebals makes Briarwood a strong contender in Class 6A. Vizzina has received numerous power 5 offers including recent offers from SEC teams Arkansas and Vanderbilt. I can’t wait to see how he progresses throughout this season.
Jabari Strait | McAdory WR/DB
Strait played a huge role in McAdory pulling off arguably the biggest upset in the area week 1. McAdory beat defending 5A champion and #1 ranked St. Paul’s Episcopal 21-7. Strait recorded 8 receptions for 115 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also played DB for the Yellow Jackets and was key in helping the McAdory defense hold St. Paul’s to just seven points. Aryvia Holmes gets a signature win in his first game as head coach of McAdory. The Yellow Jackets will travel to play Demopolis next Friday.
