Continue ReadingThe Grayson Rams took home the 7A title last fall in easy fashion, but there are a number of teams who have the chance to go all the way in 2021. One of those teams is Milton, who won the state championship back in 2018, are loaded on both sides of the ball. The Cherokee Warriors are looking to improve after their successful 8-3 record last year and have the talent on offense to possibly score with just about anyone in the area. The Roswell Hornets are an under the radar team looking to do some damage this fall, coming off a nice 8-3 season themselves.
Here are a few top defensive backs in the region to know about heading into the 2021 season…
Bryce Thornton Bryce Thornton 5'11" | 190 lbs | DB Milton | 2023 State GA – Milton
One of the best overall athletes in the region, Thornton is a quick, agile defensive back who could also see some opportunities come his way on offense as a junior this fall. The 5-foot-11 185-pounder had a big season as a sophomore last year, leading the team with three INTs at cornerback. The Eagles had one of the top defenses in the state last season and Thornton, as a sophomore, was a big reason why. He also showed that he can make the sure tackle against the run as he totaled 32 stops while breaking up 11 passes in coverage. Thornton’s athleticism also helped Milton on offense has he rushed for 261 and two touchdowns. Thornton showed impressive ball skills last year and proved he’s a threat to score any time he has the ball. He’s got speed, a good frame, and should make a big impact for Milton in 2021 on both offense, defense, and special teams.
Ethan Nation Ethan Nation 6'0" | 170 lbs | DB Roswell | 2023 State GA – Roswell
One of the biggest playmaking defenders in the state, Nation is a true ball-hawk who picked off 8 passes last year as a sophomore. He was outstanding during the Corky Kell 7-on-7 tournament and proved that he has some of the best hands and vertical jumps of any 2023 defensive back in the state. The 6-foot-0 170-pounder locates the ball well in the air and can win more often than not in jump-ball situations down the field. He has good speed and closes well when the ball is in the air. If he continues to add weight while developing his craft, Nation has a chance to be one of the top 2023 CB prospects in the country. Nation is already a major target for teams like Georgia, Alabama, Clemson, among others.
Tyjai Hopper – Alpharetta
The next big-time prospect from the Hopper family, the 2024 DB is already making noise as one of the top young defensive backs in the area. He has good size and toughness for his age at 6-foot-0 165-pounds and many expect him to make a big impact for the Raiders as a sophomore this fall. He had one brother who signed with Florida, another who signed with Boise State, and now it’s Tykai’s turn to earn some D1 offers. He’s earned one offer from Akron, and more could be on the way with a big season this fall.
