San Diego is often overlooked because of the amount of talent in Orange County and Los Angeles, but there are some teams and players in San Diego that can hang with anyone in the state.
Prep Redzone’s updated class of 2023 rankings features a couple of San Diego quarterbacks, but I will highlight a couple other quarterbacks in the class who may make an impact this fall.
Here are the players who made the list No. 8-5.
4. Brian Rudden, Otay Ranch
Rudden had a nice sophomore season for Otay Ranch. His best game was against a rebuilding Hilltop team but he was very impressive when he helped lead Otay Ranch to an upset win over Mater Dei Catholic. Mater Dei ran a lot of zone coverage and the Otay Ranch receivers found holes in it and Rudden made very accurate and well-timed throws. His relaxed state in the pocket looks good on film and the timing of his throws was above average for a sophomore.

3. [player_tooltip player_id="145247" first="Jax" last="Leatherwood"], Scripps Ranch
He got limited playing time last season behind Luke Durkin who was a reliable starter. He is 6-foot-6, 215 pounds and has the physical tools of a college quarterback. Scripps Ranch is lucky to go from a respectable veteran like Durkin to a high-upside guy like Leatherwood. He has a nice throwing motion with a high-release and an accurate arm. He is on the camp circuit this summer with some Ivy League schools.

2. [player_tooltip player_id="144910" first="Dylan" last="Curry"], Poway
Curry got some good reps as a sophomore for Poway. Their offense has a variety of formations and personnel groups which gave kept opposing defenses on their toes. Curry seemed to manage different personnel sets well and was named First Team All-Palomar league. He has a good arm, is an athlete and has a good command of the offense. It will be interesting to see how he does without [player_tooltip player_id="25149" first="Vance" last="Jefferson"] to help, but Curry will be up for the challenge.

1. [player_tooltip player_id="2472" first="Samuel" last="Cooper"] IV, University City
He is the No. 12 overall quarterback in the class and the best dual threat quarterback in the county. He is the most experienced quarterback in the county and has gotten a lot of reps on a very good Lincoln team. When he transferred out of Lincoln it was a big story and he instantly makes University City better. He makes plays like a running back and the way he runs the ball opens up passing lanes for his receivers and creates personnel mismatches.
