Overview (Class 6A-D1 Preseason Ranking: #10)

Coming off a surprise semifinal appearance in 2019, the Moore Lions came into the 2020 season with some confidence. They were inexperienced but they had confidence. The 2020 season ended up being a building block to what could be in 2021. The Lions would go 3-8 last season and if you judge them on the record alone, you wouldn't put much faith in them coming into a new season. That's not what we're going to do here. The Lions round out the preseason top ten in 6A-D1 at #10 and could end up playing the role of spoiler, similar to what they did in 2019, when they finished fourth in the district, got into the playoffs and pulled off a quarterfinal upset over district champ Edmond Santa Fe. Look at their 2020 results and you'll see what we mean. They were 3-7 in the regular season. Out of the seven losses, four were decided by seven points or less. Coming into a season where they're much more experienced, those close games could flip into wins and all of a sudden you're talking about a 7-3 record instead of 3-7. The Lions will have to come out and prove it on the field with seven starters returning on offense and another six starters coming back on defense. We think the strength of this team will be on the offensive side of the ball as they will have one of the better offensive line units in 6A-D1 and that will set up the skill guys to do what they want to do in both the passing and run game. The Lions are in a tough district with Owasso and Union being the two heavy favorites. However, just like we said earlier, if the Lions can play spoiler and just make it into the playoffs, they can do some damage from there.

Denver Wolfe - 2023 Quarterback
Last year, Denver Wolfe stepped into some pretty big shoes. He was replacing superstar quarterback Daniel Hishaw, who has now transitioned to running back at Kansas. Wolfe put up some respectable numbers but it was very clear that the Lion offense would look a little different with Wolfe back there. Now, coming into his junior season, we think that Wolfe could end up being a breakout player at the QB position and add to the already deep 2023 class. Wolfe will have a really strong offensive line, a solid running game and some absolute playmakers to throw the ball too. All the signs are pointing towards a big year for Wolfe.
[player_tooltip player_id="101399" first="Marcus" last="Dockins Jr."] - 2022 Athlete
We've written quite a bit this year about Moore's next standout in [player_tooltip player_id="101399" first="Marcus" last="Dockins Jr."]. The playmaker took that role from Hishaw once he graduated and was without a doubt the best player for the Lions in 2020. Whether he was lining up at running back or wide receiver, he was making something special happen. Dockins will more than likely spend the majority of his time on the offensive side as a wide receiver. He's going to be the most explosive threat that this Moore Lion offense will have and he'll be a game-planning nightmare because you won't know how the Lions will use him each week.

Notable
Because of the Covid playoff exemption, the Lions were able to keep their playoff streak going and they participated in the postseason for the fourth consecutive season. The Lions would have been left on the outside looking in if it was a normal year but they made it nonetheless. This continued a streak that began back in 2017. The Lions had a legitimate drought before punching their ticket to the 2017 postseason. They hadn't played a playoff game since 2005. Now, the only thing that is hurting the Lions is running into the Tulsa-area powers in the postseason. The Jenks Trojans have eliminated the Lions in three of the last four playoff appearances, including the last two. They were able to make a run to the semifinals in 2019 after stunning district champion Edmond Santa Fe in the first round.

2021 Schedule/Games To Watch
Aug. 27 - Edmond Memorial
Sept. 3 - AT Westmoore
Sept. 9 - Norman
Sept. 24 - Southmoore
- The district schedule opens with a rivalry contest as Moore and Southmoore will square off. Last year, the game went to overtime and the Sabercats would end up prevailing by a single point. Moore needs to get district play off to the right start and they can't afford a loss to start things up. The Lions will have the benefit of being rested after non-district play. They'll have week three off before taking on the rival Sabercats. Both rivals have the same goals coming into this season and that's to play spoiler and steal one of those playoff spots from the higher rated teams. The winner here keeps the dream alive.
Oct. 1 - Edmond North
Oct. 7 - AT Norman North
Oct. 15 - Union
Oct. 22 - AT Putnam City
Oct. 28 - Owasso
Nov. 5 - AT Mustang
- It may all come down to week ten when the Lions go on the road to face Mustang. The top three ranked teams in this district are Owasso, Union and Norman North. Then you have Mustang, Southmoore and Moore. Only four teams can end up punching their ticket to the playoffs and this could very well decide that final playoff spot if the season plays out the way the rankings are. Moore will go on the road to face a very talented Mustang team but they'll come in with some momentum. Despite going 3-8 last year, one of those wins was a 30-point drubbing of Mustang in week ten last year. If they can keep that momentum going, the playoffs might begin for them the following week.
