Overview
In high school football, you hear all the time how the goal is to “win the last one” and only a select few teams get to win their last game. In just about every situation, that “last one” is a state championship. For the Cache Bulldogs, they won the last one but their season came to an end before the state championship. 2020 was obviously impacted greatly by the Covid pandemic and it had an impact on every week of the season. For a few teams, they had their seasons come to an end because of Covid, not because they lost on the field. Cache beat Tecumseh in the first round of the playoffs in a shootout. They would then have to forfeit their spot in the next round because of Covid and Tecumseh would take their spot in the second round. It didn’t happen very often but for teams like Cache and Ada in 4A and Claremore and Shawnee in 5A, they won their playoff game but had their season come to an end. Needless to say, Cache is excited to get back on the field and they should certainly come in with some momentum, knowing they were never eliminated from last year’s playoff. As they come into this season, the Bulldogs are one of the teams that are outside of our preseason rankings but we have our eyes on as a team that could end up being a spoiler team. We’ve mentioned this a few times in the other previews, featuring some of Cache’s district opponents, but this district is brutal and the four teams that earn playoff spots will have earned them the hard way. Six starters return on the offensive side of the ball and another five starters come back on defense. The Bulldogs could end up playing spoiler in this district and make yet another trip back to the postseason. And if they get there, you know they’ll come in with unfinished business on their minds.

Players To Watch
Jaylen Niedo – 2022 Defensive End
Coming into this summer, we didn’t know much about Cache’s senior defensive end Jaylen Niedo but now that we’ve gotten a chance to check him out, he will certainly have a big impact on Cache’s success. First off, Niedo passes the eye test and looks like an outstanding athlete in person. Then you throw on the film and see what he’s able to do on the line of scrimmage and he terrorizes opposing offensive linemen. He’ll also help Cache’s offense as a tight end but we love his future as a defensive end. In fact, Cache’s offensive and defensive lines as a whole should be something to watch this fall as they have some massive human beings.

absolutely passes the eye test and then some. We got a chance to see him in person this summer and were very impressed. Combine his physical stature with what he’s able to do to opponents on the line of scrimmage and Wermy is one of the best linemen in the state’s 2023 class. He is a physical monster that has a tremendous upside.

Notable
We already mentioned how heartbreaking the end of Cache’s season was with Covid eliminating them and forcing them to forfeit. That has somewhat overshadowed the fact that for the first time in school history, Cache had won playoff games in back to back season. Sorry to the Tecumseh Savages, but the Bulldogs have faced off with Tecumseh in the first round in each of the last two years. Both times, Cache has prevailed and moved on to the next round. Playoff success is something new for the Bulldogs as they had just one playoff victory in school history before they beat Tecumseh in the 2019 first round. In the last two years alone, they’ve had two playoff wins and they’ll be a team to watch in Class 4A once again this season. The district will be tough and they’ll have to scratch and claw to get one of the playoff spots. But if the Bulldogs are able to claim one of the four playoff spots, they’ll be in the postseason for the fourth consecutive season and that will tie the school record for consecutive playoff appearances. The other time they did it was back in the early eighties.
2021 Schedule/Games To Watch
Aug. 27 – El Reno
Sept. 3 – Altus
Sept. 10 – AT Plainview
Sept. 24 – AT Bethany
– After a very tough non-district schedule, things don’t get easier as Cache will open up district play on the road against Bethany. This will begin a three week stretch in district play that will be an absolute gauntlet. Bethany, Newcastle and Clinton are all in consecutive weeks and all three teams are in our preseason top ten. Obviously, the goal is to win them all, but if Cache gets out of this stretch with a 2-1 record, that will set them up for playoff positioning and give them a shot at the district crown. Cache lost to Newcastle and Clinton last year but did beat Bethany 28-20.
Oct. 1 – Newcastle
Oct. 8 – AT Clinton
Oct. 14 – AT Chickasha
Oct. 21 – Elk City
Oct. 29 – AT Elgin
Nov. 5 – Weatherford
– Coming into the final week of the season, Cache could be playing for a district championship, they could be scratching and clawing for a playoff spot, or they could just be playing spoiler at this point. We’ve said it plenty of times before but this district will be brutal. The Bulldogs will get Weatherford at home this season and they’ll be looking to get some revenge after last year. Most of Cache’s losses were close games but the Weatherford game was a blowout. The Bulldogs could be a win and you’re in situation so this game is obviously going to be incredibly important to their season.
