Prospects were finally able to take visits to schools in the month of June and are now making decisions on whether they want to end their recruitment or leave it open throughout the fall.
We’ve seen some of the state’s best make their college commitments over the last few weeks, and one of the best backs in Georgia, Woodward Academy (GA) star and four-star Damari Alston Damari Alston 5'11" | 205 lbs | RB Woodward Academy | 2022 State GA made his decision this week as well.
The impressive tailback held offers from schools across the country, and this week he decided to commit to play for the Auburn Tigers. Alston chose Auburn over programs like LSU, Penn State, Northwestern, among others.
Ranked as the No.2 running back prospect in Georgia, Alston has good size at 5-foot-11 205-pounds and looks incredibly fast on film for his size. He dominated the competition all last year as he rushed for 1,507 yards and 24 touchdowns. He rushed for over 100 yards in 9 of 12 games last year and was bottled up against only one team, eventual state-champion Marist. Alston changes direction well for his size and has an extra gear when he’s in the open field. He was just too talented for opposing defenses last year.
It isn’t an overly deep class at running back in this current cycle, but it’s easy to see why Alston earned major SEC offers. He didn’t play against the best competition last year, but when you watch him run, it’s clear he’s a natural. Even if he played 7A ball against some of the state’s top defenses, it would be tough for most of them to stop Alston.
Not only is he a strong runner, but Alston is a weapon in the passing game and other areas as well. He ended his junior season 1,943 total yards and 27 touchdowns, showing he can beat defenses in a number of different ways. He was able to put the team on his back last year, but he won’t have to carry the entire load at Auburn. He’s a tough, physical back with good speed, and that’s exactly what the Tigers are looking for from their new coaching staff.
If you want to play running back at Auburn, there are high expectations, and Alston has the talent, the drive, the toughness, the size, and enough speed to meet those expectations down the road.
