Many of the existing players in the class of 2023 rankings took a jump in their position columns. These young men have shown tremendous dedication and growth through film, camp performances, the weight room, and even other sports. Take a look below to see whose stock has risen and what makes each of these young men so impressive.
QB1 [player_tooltip player_id="104081" first="JJ" last="Kohl"], Ankeny, 6’6, 225, hudl, Twitter
Kohl bumps up to the top spot in the Quarterback rankings. His recent offers really support the notion that he is the top prospect in a crop of gunslingers that couldn’t be more deep. His physical measurables and athletic tangibles are everything a big time school dreams of. Kohl’s mechanics are so sharp and he is already throwing darts on difficult, advanced routes. He sees the field and coverage from the pocket exceptionally well.
LB1 [player_tooltip player_id="105152" first="Rusty" last="VanWetzinga IV"], Pleasant Valley, 6’1, 210, hudl, Twitter
VanWetzinga bumps up to claim the top spot in the Linebacker rankings. He has remarkable fundamentals and plays with unparalleled efficiency and intensity. It is also clear that his football IQ is second to none. He is very cerebral and that is evidenced by how quickly he diagnoses and gets to the ball. It is obvious VanWetzinga can identify a pre-snap key; his knowledge and physicality is a very lethal combination.
WR1 [player_tooltip player_id="104716" first="Javion" last="Jondle"], Fort Dodge, 6’2, 180, hudl, Twitter
Jondle now finds himself at the top of the Wide Receiver rankings; with his size and athletic ability there isn’t really anything he can’t do at the position right now. Jondle runs expert vertical routes that blow the top off of a defense and adjusts exceptionally well to the ball once it is in the air. He can leap and reposition himself at any moment to beat coverage and come down with the ball. Jondle is just as dangerous underneath.
TE2 [player_tooltip player_id="104751" first="Blake" last="Herold"], Shenandoah, 6’3, 225, hudl, Twitter
Between the classes of 2022 and 2023 the state of Iowa is trending to produce an unheard of back to back Tight End group. The amount of players in this batch with a Division 1 ceiling is hard to believe. Herold bumps up to the number two spot as a punishing blocker and ball carrier. The mixture of size, ability, and tenacity he brings to the position is outstanding. He is very fast for his size and can do a lot after the catch.
DL2 [player_tooltip player_id="119142" first="Zavion" last="McMurran"], Estherville Lincoln Central, 6’2, 220, hudl, Twitter
McMurran now owns the number two spot in the Defensive Line rankings; the pure speed and violence he brings to the position is top notch. His game speed is virtually impossible to block, the violence with which he executes is scary, and his fundamentals are elite. McMurran is always in control and his reactions are instantaneous and on point. He is a model of consistency against the run and a technician in his pass rush.
TE4 [player_tooltip player_id="104764" first="George" last="Williams"], Roosevelt, 6’4, 210, hudl, Twitter
Williams, who is equally impressive as a blocker and receiver, now finds himself at number four in the Tight End column. He attacks with the mechanics and physicality of an Offensive Lineman. In space or the trenches, inserting or base blocking, leading or pulling, Williams is dominant. Williams is very difficult to defend in routes; his combination of size and speed create matchup nightmares, especially on crossing patterns.
QB5 [player_tooltip player_id="24030" first="Jamison" last="Patton"], Des Moines Roosevelt, 6’2, 190, hudl, Twitter
Patton’s film and offseason tell a big story of a very determined athlete with a sky high ceiling; he moves up to number five in the Quarterback rankings, which is undoubtedly the deepest position in the class. Patton’s arm strength is off the charts and, what really impresses, is how he controls it. His ability to launch it downfield on a perfect trajectory or fire a ball through a tight window on a rope is eye opening. Patton is a true dual-threat.
OL5 [player_tooltip player_id="104803" first="Kevin" last="Quayee"], Des Moines North, 6’3, 280, hudl, Twitter
Quayee, a true mauler of an Offensive Lineman, climbs to the number five spot in his position’s respective rankings. Quayee is a pancake machine who attacks with force that goes through his opponent; defenders simply can’t recover when he gets hands on them. What impresses most is how he takes opponents away from the play as he finishes them. He isn’t just physical, he executes with a clear understanding of the blocking scheme.
WR5 [player_tooltip player_id="104721" first="Walker" last="Tart"], Dubuque Senior, 6’2, 190, hudl, Twitter
Tart is a big bodied, skillful route runner and that earns him the number five spot in the Wide Receiver column. He adjusts his speed so well to lose defenders on any pattern he is in and opponents just can’t stick to him. This ability keeps opponents at Bay because they are so afraid of getting beat deep. Tart can beat them deep anyway, but that threat gets him wide open underneath quite often. He is a reliable and dynamic target.
LB5 [player_tooltip player_id="105167" first="Zach" last="English"], Ankeny Centennial, 6’1, 180, hudl, Twitter
English, making one of the bigger jumps in the update, rounds out the top five in the Linebacker category. He is as effective of a defender you will find between the tackles. English sees space and takes it, destroys and evades blocks, and blows up gaps and brings the lumber. He is twitchy and active at the snap; it doesn’t take more than a split second for English to recognize what is going on and get after it. He has a big time motor.
LB6 [player_tooltip player_id="105168" first="Chase" last="Mahoney"], Cedar Rapids Washington, 6’3, 185, hudl, Twitter
Mahoney’s frame and athletic skill set allow for a lot of versatility in alignment; he executes from any front at a very high level. This lands him at number six in the updated Linebacker rankings. Mahoney has incredible range and closing speed. There isn’t much he can’t get to when action goes away. He is just as effective when an offense decides to go downhill. Mahoney is excellent at defeating blocks and beating ball carriers to gaps.
OL6 [player_tooltip player_id="104804" first="Cael" last="Winter"], Waukee, 6’4, 235, hudl, Twitter
Winter has the frame and depth of Offensive Line play to be a monster at any position up front; this earns him the number six spot in the updated rankings. His frame is sure to fill out over the next couple of years, but he already plays with a lot of power. It is scary to think about how good he currently is and how much untapped potential still exists. Winter’s in game mechanics are excellent and he paves the way on the ground.
RB7 [player_tooltip player_id="24025" first="Brady" last="Wavrunek"], Sioux City North, 5’10, 180, hudl, Twitter
Wavrunek cracks the top ten in the Running Back column in the updated rankings as a big stock-riser. He is a shifty, patient, north-south runner who sees the field very well and his abilities maximize gains. Wavrunek is evasive and absorbs contact. Even when lanes don’t appear he has the ability to pick up positive yardage. When defenders close in he takes the fight to them and explodes forward for hard earned yards.
WR8 [player_tooltip player_id="104724" first="Dillon" last="Ranck"], Norwalk, 6’3, 180, hudl, Twitter
Ranck is so nimble and agile for an athlete with his frame and catch radius; the scenarios this creates on Friday nights move him up to number eight in the Wide Receiver rankings. He is dominant in routes that get him breaking or changing direction. He is so good at taking advantage when he forces Defensive Backs to make the first move. Ranck makes very difficult catches look routine and runs hard after the catch.
