On Sunday, Prep Redzone hosted some of the best athletes in the state of Oklahoma for our Prep Redzone Oklahoma spring showcase. Coaches from nearly ten college staffs were on hand to watch some of Oklahoma’s best in the 2022-2024 classes. We’ll have content from the Showcase all week here on Prep Redzone Oklahoma, check out some of the other articles that are already up! This feature looks at five campers that we didn’t know much about going into the camp, but they would end up being some of the best at their positions throughout the day. It’s time to take a look at five breakout prospects from Sunday’s Showcase!
[player_tooltip player_id="155873" first="Asher" last="Earl"] - 2022 Defensive Back - Millwood
Only one thing was somewhat disappointing with our first ever camp in Oklahoma, and that was the lack of defensive backs! Too many wide receivers and not enough defensive backs. However, that did allow Millwood 2022 defensive back [player_tooltip player_id="155873" first="Asher" last="Earl"] to get as many reps and opportunities as he could handle. We did have a few prospects that went back and forth and worked as a wide receiver and as a defensive back. But Earl came to the event registered as a DB and put in work as a DB. Earl impressed his position coach, Dwight Dobbins, who is one of the best DB trainers in Oklahoma today. Dobbins was impressed with Earl and so were we. One of the things that I personally mentioned at the start of the camp was that everyone there should compete and take advantage of this opportunity. Earl certainly did that at the cornerback position and we’re excited to see more of him. He’s part of a big returning group at Millwood and the Falcons appear to be ready to contend for gold yet again in 2A.
[player_tooltip player_id="155874" first="Duvan" last="Boshoff"] - 2022 Defensive Lineman - Regent Prep
Some guys just immediately pass the eye test and that was the case on Sunday for Regent Prep defensive end [player_tooltip player_id="155874" first="Duvan" last="Boshoff"]. The testing portion of the camp hadn’t even began, prospects were still stretching and already eyes were starting to key in on Boshoff. Standing 6’4, weighing 200 pounds and quite simply, looking jacked, Boshoff immediately had scout’s attention. Then the testing portion began and Boshoff passed another eye test. He’s big but he moves incredibly light on his feet and had some of the best results in the shuttle drills where he was able to showcase his quickness and lateral movement. However, it wasn’t perfection from start to finish for the Regent Prep big man. He struggled at times during 1 on 1’s but then flashed that athleticism in other match-up’s. So he definitely has some things to clean up but all the stuff you can’t coach is there and Boshoff should be considered a hidden gem in this class. With the right coaching and the right system, Boshoff could turn into a monster of a pass rusher.
[player_tooltip player_id="155876" first="Louie" last="Carlson"] - 2023 Running Back - Verdigris
In our Camp MVP Feature, we awarded Sand Springs running back [player_tooltip player_id="154570" first="Blake" last="Jones"] the MVP for his work at running back. However, a close second was Verdigris 2023 RB [player_tooltip player_id="155876" first="Louie" last="Carlson"]. What put Jones over the top was a better performance in the testing portion of the camp with faster 40-yard dash times. After talking with our RB’s coach Jeremy Smith, he mentioned Carlson being right there with Jones when it came to the drills and during 1 on 1 competition. He was very impressed with Carlson during that portion of the camp and he was certainly right there with Jones when it came to the drills. This is a scary revelation for the rest of 3A football because Carlson is yet another 2023 prospect from Verdigris that will provide nightmares not only this fall but in 2022 as well. It’s been no secret that the Verdigris 2023 class is one of the best in school history and the emergence of Carlson will give them yet another weapon on the offensive side of the ball.
[player_tooltip player_id="127357" first="Luke" last="Milligan"] - 2024 Quarterback - Lincoln Christian
The future is bright at Lincoln Christian when it comes to the quarterback position. That should come as a surprise to nobody as the Bulldog program is one of the best in the state when it comes to producing quarterback talent. They already have one of the best signal-callers in the state with 2022 QB [player_tooltip player_id="52787" first="Max" last="Brown"] but we might know who the next QB star will be. 2024 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="127357" first="Luke" last="Milligan"] is widely considered to be the next guy for the Bulldogs at that position and he was able to showcase his skillset on Sunday. Milligan was one of five 2024 quarterbacks that we had at the Showcase and our QB coaches mentioned him at the top of the list when it came to that class. Milligan looks like an athletic QB that can sling the ball all over the field. He had no problems in 1 on 1’s throwing the ball all over the field in Owasso. He has a light frame but plenty of time to fill out and become one of the better QB’s in the state’s 2024 class.
[player_tooltip player_id="155875" first="River" last="Faulkner"] - 2023 Athlete - Heritage Hall
Out of the five prospects on this breakdown, Heritage Hall’s [player_tooltip player_id="155875" first="River" last="Faulkner"] might be the one we knew the most about coming into Sunday’s event. However, we didn’t know he could move like that! Faulkner immediately got our attention when the testing portion of the camp began and he clocked in two surprising times during the 40-yard dash. Faulkner ran a 4.50 followed by a 4.57. Standing 5’10 and weighing 190 pounds, Faulkner was muscle that was moving fast. He’ll just be a junior this fall and he has the potential to be a two-way star for the Chargers. He worked out with the running backs on Sunday but he could also be an outstanding linebacker on the defensive side of the ball. He showed on Sunday that he has the speed and quickness to cover all over the field and brings a very physical brand of football to the field. Faulkner could end up not only being a breakout camper but a breakout star this fall.
