Immediately after his teams’ 28-25 win over Seffner Armwood in the annual Sling & Shoot 7-on-7 tournament at the University of South Florida, Daytona Beach Mainland head coach Travis Roland told his players that the win was bigger than most think.
Roland, who returned to his alma mater this off-season, was indeed ready to come home – and in front of USF head coach Jeff Scott and his staff, the Bucs came away with the win – and plenty of respect.
“This was one of the first places that college 7-on-7 events were held,” Roland told his team. “This Sling & Shoot is known by everyone, and if you win, there’s a lot of prestige.”
Indeed, like so many other colleges nationally, the Bulls are hosting as many prospects and teams as possible – with two more showcases and another filling-up-fast 7-on-7 tournament.
After guiding Flagler Palm Coast to the playoffs in each of his four seasons in charge, accepted the position, Roland departed FPC with a 28-12 record, including the school’s first undefeated regular season in history (2017).
Last weekend at UCF, and on Thursday at USF, this team showcased some quality talent – like James Randle, who put on a show that everyone talked about.
In addition to Armwood and Mainland – defending 8A state champion Sanford Seminole, for the second straight week, and 6A power Lake Minneola, who rounded out the Final 4.
The tournament, which was limited to 24 teams to help follow school protocol rules. But the teams that were on hand for this important and competitive event.
Among those schools were Clearwater, Plant City, Tampa Gaither, Port Orange Spruce Creek, Tampa Plant, American Collegiate, Lennard (Ruskin), Winter Haven Akelynn Christian, Tampa Sickles, Davenport Ridge Community, Tampa King, Tarpon Springs East Lake, Lakeland Lake Gibson, Lake Wales, Palmetto, Tampa Leto, Celebration and St. Petersburg Hollins.
