Over 200 athletes participated in the Ironton showcase last Friday night and the talent level was exceptional all over the field. One of the highlights of the evening was the seven-on-seven competition. The quarterbacks, receivers, and backs went up against the defensive backs and linebackers. Here are some of those athletes from both sides of the football that stood out.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="34492" first="Trevor" last="Carter"] 6’2” 210 OLB Ironton 2023</strong>
Carter is one of the top players in the 2023 class and he demonstrated why Friday night in his home stadium. Carter, who is known for his toughness and physicality, proved he can excel in pass coverage during the seven-on-seven competition. He displays a quick break on the football and can flip his hips in space to change direction. Carter is a very athletic outside linebacker.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="92619" first="Caleb" last="Arthur"] 6’3” 200 TE Wheelersburg 2023</strong>
Arthur is one of the top two tight ends in the state for the 2023 class, but he proved he has the speed and ball skills to be a threat as a receiver for the Pirates this fall. Arthur made several acrobatic receptions in the seven-on-seven competition Friday. Arthur can line up on the line, flexed out, or in the backfield to take advantage of his versatility.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="34400" first="Grant" last="Mastin"] 6’1” 220 ILB Jackson 2022</strong>
Mastin is a high energy inside linebacker who, on film, is a run stopping downhill attacking defensive player. He stood out Friday at the Ironton showcase as a solid pass defender. Mastin can really extend from the hook through curl zones effectively. He can close quickly from the inside to out once the football is released.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="34470" first="Gage" last="Sullivan"] 6’3” 200 WR Kirtland 2022</strong>
Sullivan traveled all the way from northern Ohio to participate in the Ironton showcase and it was worth the trip for his exposure. Sullivan is a tall and impressive wideout that is destined to be a possession receiver at the next level, but he proved he can kick it into another gear to blow by defensive backs Friday night. Sullivan, who can play multiple positions, possesses exceptional ball skills.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="34408" first="Will" last="Futhey"] 6’5” 205 WR/TE Waverly 2022</strong>
One of the more versatile athletes in southern Ohio, Futhey plays wide receiver but is projected as a tight end at the next level. He has good speed and quickness and consistently wins the one-on-battles as a receiver. Futhey could also line up as a wingback or H-back at the next level.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="121675" first="Angelo" last="Washington"] 6’2” 220 DL/LB Ironton 2022</strong>
Washington, who has played on the defensive line for Ironton, lined up at inside linebacker Friday night and proved he could play in space. Angelo was impressive with his lateral movement and range from the linebacker position. He was able to play the middle hook zones well and extend to the curl when necessary.
