We've published our 2023 prospect rankings with the Top 75 rising juniors in the state of New Mexico. You can check out the complete rankings RIGHT HERE. Right now, we're taking a look and putting a spotlight on 10 quarterbacks that have made their way onto our rankings with their play on the field or at camps over the past several months.
[player_tooltip player_id="137861" first="Aden" last="Chavez"], Cibola: We've been talking about Chavez for a while, so it should come as no surprise that he's the No. 1 quarterback for the 2023 class. Unfortunately, we got to see him play in only two games this spring. Chavez suffered a broken collarbone in Cibola's win over Eldorado and underwent surgery. He completed 41-of-65 passes for 522 yards and 5 touchdowns in those two games. He's 6-foot-5 with a powerful throwing arm. Yeah, major college coaches are interested.
[player_tooltip player_id="137862" first="Aidan" last="Armenta"], La Cueva: Armenta's No. 2 QB ranking is based more on what he did BEFORE the season than during. Armenta was sensational at the QBUniverse camp in Phoenix earlier this year, earning accolades as one of the top performers there. Armenta has the size (6-foot-2, 175 pounds) to attract major college coaches. He'll be La Cueva's starting QB in 2021 and 2022.
[player_tooltip player_id="137884" first="A.J." last="Rivera"], Albuquerque Academy: Surprised at Rivera's lofty ranking? You shouldn't be. Albuquerque Academy doesn't get a lot of attention from the local media, so some folks probably don't know much about Rivera. First, he's 6-foot-2, 190 pounds and VERY accurate. In AA's four games this spring, he completed 74.2 percent of his passes for 728 yards and 6 touchdowns. Between his size and accuracy, Rivera will draw plenty of college interest.
[player_tooltip player_id="137885" first="Paul" last="Cieremans"], Los Lunas: Cieremans introduced himself to the New Mexico high school football community by emerging as a legitimate dual threat quarterback, leading the Tigers to a 3-0 record. His highlight may have been an 85-yard TD run against la Cueva. Against Capital, he displayed a strong throwing arm on deep throws. Perfect spirals too.
[player_tooltip player_id="137892" first="Myles" last="Lane"], Atrisco Heritage: Another young quarterback who got the opportunity to play in just two games this spring. Lane showed he has potential as a legitimate dual threat quarterback.
[player_tooltip player_id="137890" first="Alejandro" last="Sapien"], St. Pius X: Sapien split QB duties with rising senior Cian Jones this spring, completing 13 of 21 passes, including 12-of-17 against Portales. St. Pius X should have a productive offense in 2021.
[player_tooltip player_id="137924" first="Adrian" last="Solis"], Goddard: Solis was Goddard's primary quarterback in the spring. He secured some valuable experience that should only benefit him in the fall.
[player_tooltip player_id="137915" first="Corbin" last="Farrar"], Artesia: Is Farrar the next great quarterback for Artesia? He's the likely candidate to replace [player_tooltip player_id="26223" first="Cord" last="Cox"] for the Bulldogs. The biggest question surrounding Artesia is new coach Jeremy Maupin and how he'll alter the Artesia offense, if at all.
[player_tooltip player_id="137916" first="Dane" last="Naylor"], Carlsbad: Because Carlsbad had only 10 seniors on its spring roster, young players like Naylor were given opportunities by coach Gary Bradley to play a lot of snaps. Naylor was 22-for-40 passing for 368 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. On the ground Naylor ran 29 times for 162 yards and scored twice. A nice start.
[player_tooltip player_id="137893" first="Marcquis" last="Henry"], Aztec: Henry's top goal going into the fall is recapturing the magic he showed as a freshman in 2019 when he threw for 1,245 yards and 13 touchdowns.
