Williams is not only one of our favorite prospects in the entire 2022 class, but he is one of the most talented players in the entire state. Not only is he a dominant force on the defensive line, but he also has 30+ Power 5 offers to back this up. When you cut on his Junior tape, it is evident that he is a force to be reckoned with off of the snap of the ball. Not only does he get off the ball quickly, but he has the reactionary skills, movement skills, and fluidity to play instinctive football. This helps him to make plays all over the field, whether is is behind the line of scrimmage, at the line, or in pursuit. As an end, he has great burst and overall speed, and he also does a good job of using his arms and hands, which ultimately allows him to create good leverage. Needless to say, he uses his length and frame to his advantage. Williams also displays a dominating strength that allows him to be able to deliver a pop on contact, making it almost inescapable for ball carriers.
DJ Lucas- QB
Going into next season, Lucas will hope to be able to improve upon his solid play in 2020, but will have a ton to work on in the off-season. While he does have decent arm strength and ball placement, we would like to see him work on his overall throwing mechanics. He releases the ball at inconsistent points, and at times, it can flutter and come out inaccurately due to this. Nevertheless, he does an okay job of finding receivers down the field. Lucas may not process the game as fast as he needs to sometimes, but his athleticism certainly helps to make up for this. He has good burst and speed, and he also uses this to help him get up the field effectively, turning seemingly broken plays into positive gains and even points Next season, we want to see more consistency in Lucas’ footwork, and his throwing mechanics. If he can manage to do this, he will most likely see a jump in his production.
Saxton Melvin- CB
Out of the 2 DB’s on this list, Melvin does a better job of matching up in man coverage, and playing with good bend, and footwork. From start to finish, Melvin allows for his footwork to be one of the key factors in his success when matching up off of the line. This helps him to remain in the hip pocket of receivers, and to be able to mimic their movement effectively. Even though he can get caught leaning at times, we like the way he is able to play on his toes, and react accordingly with little wasted movement. His use of his hands, and eyes in coverage also contribute to his success. Along with this, Melvin also plays with decent speed, and this is shown in his ability to cover in deep pass situations, and when he has to come out of his breaks to make plays on the ball. Next season, we expect Melvin to have another strong year, and to continue to improve in his fundamentals.
Christian Curry- DB
One of the most fun things to watch with Christian Curry is his ability to consistently find himself near the football. He plays decently well in space, and allows for his fluid movement skills to help him get to multiple levels of the field. Paired with this, his speed, and overall quickness when playing his position helps him to be able to take decent angles, and make key stops for his team. He does a decent job of bending as well, and the burst out of his breaks is okay as well. While we think he can certainly improve in this area, we do like where he is at this point of time with this ability. Moving forward, we would like to see him become more consistent with some of the leverage he plays with when engaging opposing players, as well as his ability to flip his hips and turn and run, all while remaining in the receivers hip pocket.
