With two forfeits – one in the playoffs – head Coach Jeff Smothers and his Deltona football team left the 2020 season with mixed feelings.
While losing the two forfeit games was chalked up to the pandemic and the way many of us had to live this past fall, it comes down to those wins that this program has to build from.
Victories over Port Orange Atlantic (43-0), rival Deltona Pine Ridge (39-0) and Orlando Freedom (17-14) gave this program something concrete to build on – and they will when they play Tampa Catholic at home on May 21 in the spring game.
With a talented and experienced rising senior class (2022), the Wolves will use the spring to showcase many of the prospects who not only got it done on the field, but in the classroom as well.
Promising talent like Anthony Atanda (Athlete/LB, 6-2, 185 - 2.61 GPA), Joseph Figueroa (OL, 6-2, 275 - 2.6 GPA), Deandre Hamilton (DB/Athlete, 6-1, 150), Noah Hancock (RB/LB, 5-8, 160 – 2.81 GPA), Branden Johnson (LB, 6-0, 228 - 2.8 GPA) and offensive lineman Jevon Lloyd (6-1, 255 - 3.47 GPA), who all figure to impact this team in 2021.
Also, prospects Xavier Martinez (LB/DB, 5-9, 180 - 3.14 GPA), Chris McLean (DL/OL, 6-2, 230 - 2.78 GPA), D’Andrec Patterson (DB, 5-11, 150 – 2.9 GPA), Emmanuel White (LB, 5-8, 160 - 3.76 GPA) and impressive offensive lineman Ridge Wilson (5-10, 235 - 3.39 GPA) will give the Wolves some potential leadership.
WATCH OUT FOR THE 2023 CLASS
The plan for Coach Smothers and his staff is to build this program for the long run – and with a gifted group of rising juniors (Class of 2023), things are certainly looking good.
Among those young men who are ready to turn heads are Chase Cross (OL – 6-1, 236 - 3.10 GPA), Austin Gomes (WR, 6-1, 160 – 3.36 GPA), Gabevon Green (DB, 6-1, 155 – 3.78 GPA), Orion Joiner (QB/WR, 6-0, 155 – 3.43 GPA), Jude Santana (Athlete, 5-10, 171 – 3.66 GPA), Nathaniel Tsang (LB, 5-9, 185 – 3.41 GPA) and defensive end Xyrus Zalaya (6-2, 210 – 2.94 GPA).
THE SOPHOMORES ARE READY – AND WAITING
Make no mistake, without growth from the underclassmen, there is simply no way that programs can build – and with a solid and always improving rising sophomore class (2024), the progression will continue.
That class includes promising prospects Ricky Dobbyn (WR, 6-0, 160 – 3.75 GPA), C.J. Estridge (TE/LB, 5-11, 190 – 3.1 GPA), Rameir Gordon (DB/Athlete, 6-0, 165 – 3.77 GPA), [player_tooltip player_id="128775" first="Jamison" last="Holliday"] (DB, 6-2, 174 – 3.42 GPA), Zychaun Jackson (RB, 5-10, 180 – 3.0 GPA), Caleb Oliver (OL/DL, 6-0, 215 – 3.6 GPA) and two-way (OL/DL) performer Aiden Sarvis (6-1, 230 – 3.5 GPA)
