We are only a few weeks removed from the spring season, and here we take a glimpse of next year and what it might look like. This being a unique case with the season just four months away. Have a look at who I would have listed as 6A’s top 15.
1)Central Catholic- CC returns one of the most loaded 2022 classes in the West. Junior QB Luke Johnson had a nice spring season, separate from throwing too many INT’s. Look for WR/OLB [player_tooltip player_id="28839" first="Jordan" last="King"] to be a double digit D1 offered athlete before he is done, with [player_tooltip player_id="28860" first="Zachery" last="Grisham"] and [player_tooltip player_id="28870" first="Kaden" last="Schell"] ranking as two of Oregon’s top recruits at their individual positions. You will also continue to hear 6-7 Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="104685" first="Riley" last="Williams"] 23’ name as he could potentially be one of the nation’s best TE’s for his class.
2)West Linn- This is far from a given next year as the Lions will be young, graduating one of the more talented senior classes to come through Oregon in some time. The young guys are so talented, that I will still give them the nod as one of the top two 6A teams, but next year’s state title is truly up for grabs. Look for 2023 standout [player_tooltip player_id="110180" first="Mark" last="Hamper"] to be one of the region’s best and fellow 23’ Earl Ingle to be listed among the fastest rising LB’s on the West Coast.
3)Clackamas- The Cavs went (26-1) with a state title in 2017 and 18’. They have that type of potential in the years ahead. [player_tooltip player_id="28840" first="Kaden" last="Ludwick"] is the fastest rising recruit in Oregon in my opinion, with fellow line and LB standouts [player_tooltip player_id="28861" first="Logan" last="Chastain"] 22’, [player_tooltip player_id="110175" first="Sully" last="McDaniel"] 23’, and 6-6 265-pound [player_tooltip player_id="28892" first="Kage" last="Casey"] 22’ all returning. Add in breakout RB Luke Ash, all state DB KJ Johnson-Gibson, and D1 offered WR [player_tooltip player_id="28838" first="Miles" last="Williams"] and Clack is loaded. If they show up ready to play, they have as good a shot as anybody.
4)Lake Oswego- Give Coach Coury a ton of credit, after losing a special senior group led by Casey Filkins, the Lakers bounced back destroying a very talented Tualatin team to close the year. RB [player_tooltip player_id="28882" first="Gabe" last="Olvera"] went off during the shortened season, putting himself in the 6A POY conversation. Both [player_tooltip player_id="28858" first="Dylan" last="Layne"] and [player_tooltip player_id="28887" first="Jack" last="Layne"] had outstanding seasons and the line was fundamentally sound and impressive led by [player_tooltip player_id="28890" first="Austin" last="Leykam"]
5)Tualatin- What will be one of the most talked about teams heading into next season, with recent Oregon St commit [player_tooltip player_id="28846" first="Cole" last="Prusia"] being named the PRZ CO-Offensive POY. The T Wolves roster is ridiculously talented with unanimous 1st team All TRL QB [player_tooltip player_id="28854" first="Jackson" last="Jones"] and D1 projected athlete [player_tooltip player_id="28843" first="Malik" last="Ross"] returning. All of this said as the 37-6 loss to Lake Oswego to close the year was concerning.
6)Lakeridge- One of the most intriguing and youthful teams anywhere in the West, with a litany of D1 talent. QB [player_tooltip player_id="110242" first="Ryan" last="Oliver"] 23’ returns after an incredibly impressive Sophomore season in the state’s toughest conference. He will have the luxury of having two big time WR’s in Joey Olsen 6-5 200 24’ and [player_tooltip player_id="110204" first="Baylor" last="Corbin"] 23’. Olsen earned 1st team all-conference honors as a freshman, something unheard of in the TRL. Expect him to be one of the nation’s most recruited wide outs for his class.
The Pacers also bring back a stellar D led by 1st team all-league LB’s 22’s [player_tooltip player_id="28864" first="Zac" last="Waible"] ,[player_tooltip player_id="135079" first="Jake" last="Reichle"] and POY [player_tooltip player_id="28862" first="Nui" last="Tovey"]. They are joined by another current freshman standout in Ethan Biondine. If Lakeridge can get some line play, they will be in good shape.
7)Jesuit- The Crusaders return a solid 2022 perimeter, led by D1 projected LB/TE [player_tooltip player_id="28855" first="Spencer" last="McKelligon"] and Vermont Lacrosse commit, QB [player_tooltip player_id="28873" first="Tatum" last="Lewis"]. They will also benefit greatly with the return of [player_tooltip player_id="28888" first="Michael" last="Rincon"] who had a monster Junior season running ball, along with defensive standout [player_tooltip player_id="28893" first="Johnny" last="Miller"].
The biggest question for the Crusaders will come up front where they lose two of the state’s best in [player_tooltip player_id="28703" first="Charlie" last="Pickard"] and [player_tooltip player_id="28739" first="Declan" last="Quillin"].
8)Newberg-Definitely the breakout team of the year within Oregon. Give Coach Hastin a lot of credit. The Tigers will return a host of talented kids as well, led by 1st Team All State PRZ running back [player_tooltip player_id="28881" first="Price" last="Pothier"], and three-year starter [player_tooltip player_id="28909" first="Levi" last="Durrell"] at QB.
The Tigers made a statement the first game of the year by beating Sherwood 19-16 and then Mountainside 34-28. The question becomes can they maintain this type of consistency.
9)Mountainside- The Mavericks graduate a very talented senior group, which include the likes of PRZ Player of the Year [player_tooltip player_id="28723" first="Andrew" last="Simpson"] and [player_tooltip player_id="28786" first="Justin" last="Hughes"], both committed to Western Oregon. Even with the loss of a deep 2021 class, Mountainside returns the state’s top QB for 22’ in [player_tooltip player_id="28837" first="Brian" last="Mannion"]. He is a difference maker in my opinion and should carry the load for one of the state’s fastest rising programs.
10)Tigard- A guarantee heading into next season is that WR [player_tooltip player_id="28836" first="Keenan" last="Speer-Johnson"] will be double teamed every single contest. Tigard is a traditional 6A power as most know, running one of the state’s top programs from the youth on up. That said as their depth is in question with a lot yet to be determined.
11)Sunset- The Apollos had an unreal year finishing (6-0) with a definitive #2 ranking. That said as they graduate an incredibly talented and deep senior class, specifically on the line and on D. RB [player_tooltip player_id="108144" first="Caleb" last="Kim"] returns after a 1st team all-state type season where he did a little bit of everything. It won’t be a secret who Sunset will turn to next year.
12)Sherwood- The Bowmen seem to re-load every year, and should be considered one of the top football towns in Oregon. This is another group who graduates a deep and talented 2021 class with the likes of all everything POY [player_tooltip player_id="28712" first="Bryan" last="Cuthbertson"] and RB [player_tooltip player_id="28763" first="Clay" last="Peden"]. Sherwood always has dudes and will be fine.
13)Westview- Everyone should keep an eye on Westview. The core group of high profile D1 athletes traveled to Utah last year to play with Oregon’s season unknown. This includes one of the nation’s top WR’s in [player_tooltip player_id="28833" first="Darrius" last="Clemons"], double digit D1 offer athlete [player_tooltip player_id="28834" first="Aaron" last="Jones"], and the state’s #1 ranked 2023 [player_tooltip player_id="110171" first="Sam" last="Leavitt"].
2022 ATH Drew Bennett went off this past season and the Cats actually have a line for the first time in a while. 2023 standout [player_tooltip player_id="110174" first="Kaden" last="Huppin"] is another name you will hear often. The potential for this group is high.
14)North Medford- North has had a deep and talented roster the last few seasons, with impressive kids coming back. 6-5 WR [player_tooltip player_id="108140" first="Bryce" last="Dyer"] is intriguing and one of Oregon’s best with his length and overall athleticism. 6-4 freshman TE/WR AJ Pugliano projects as a 4* and a major D1 recruit.
They graduate a legit perimeter with the likes of [player_tooltip player_id="28754" first="Devin" last="Bradd"] and Chase Constanzo but the Black Tornado still are in good shape moving forward.
15)Sprague / Sheldon- The Oly’s were one of Oregon’s surprise teams finishing (5-1) after a couple tough seasons. Sprague will return one of Oregon’s top 23’s in [player_tooltip player_id="110179" first="Drew" last="Rodriguez"] along with rising 2022 QB [player_tooltip player_id="132512" first="Logan" last="Smith"]. They should compete for a conference title if they can get some line play.
The Irish are a traditional state power, but this last year was tough and telling, in the 48-16 loss to North Medford to close. Sophomore QB [player_tooltip player_id="110187" first="Brock" last="Thomas"] can play but he will need some other individuals to step up.
