These athletes have had an extended offseason because of covid and look to show how they’ve developed during that time. They have been putting in the work with this extended offseason and are going to showcase their improvements come March 19th. Here are the eight RBs prone for a breakout heading into the spring season.
Jahari Scott Jahari Scott 5'11" | 175 lbs | RB Lake Forest | 2022 State IL 5’11 170 Lake Forest HS Twitter Highlights
We’re starting off with Mr. Scott from Lake Forest HS. He’s an N/S runner with quick acceleration which he uses to blow by the 2nd level of defenders. He sees cutback lanes and can catch out of the backfield. Whether he’s running the ball or catching a pass, he uses his agility and jump cuts to break arm tackles playing through contact. Overall, Scott has a high upside and untapped potential that is yet to flourish. Once this spring season starts we will get to see how he’s developed and honed his craft.
Cody Lunsford 6’0 190 Herscher HS Highlights
Next up is Mr. Lunsford from Herscher HS. He’s an N/S runner who isn’t afraid of contact and loves to lower his shoulder. He has the speed to blow by the 2nd level of defenders and is used in the passing game as well. He can catch out of the backfield and lines up at receiver to run routes where his elusiveness comes to light with his juke move. Overall, Lunsford turned eyes last season in the I8 conference. Look for his untapped potential to come to light with the extended offseason when the season starts March 19th.
Willie Roberts 5’8 155 Bloom Township HS Twitter Highlights
Mr. Roberts is from Bloom Township HS. He’s an N/S speed back who hits the holes hard and uses jump cuts to make the first defender miss showcasing his elusiveness. When he’s running the ball he doesn’t go down easily by fighting for extra yards and in the passing game can catch out of the backfield, in both offensive attacks he’s a playmaker. Overall, once Roberts gets his name out there and gets junior film look for his recruiting to gain traction.
Wade Abrams Wade Abrams 6'0" | 200 lbs | RB Cary Grove | 2022 State IL 6’0 205 Cary-Grove HS Twitter Highlights
Mr. Abrams is from Cary-Grove HS. He’s used in both the run and pass attacks. In the running attack, he reads his blocks, fights for extra yards using his jump cuts, and is used as a lead blocker. In the passing attack, he can catch out of the backfield and make contested catches. Overall, Abrams used this extended offseason to hone his craft and it’s going to be a sight to see once the pads get put on March 19th.
Detric Dee 5’11 200 Bradley Bourbonnais HS Twitter Highlights
Mr. Dee is from Bradley Bourbonnais HS. He’s an N/S runner that likes to mix in the E/W style as well. He has the speed to get past the 2nd level of defenders, reads his blocks, and breaks arm tackles. Overall, Dee is looking to build upon last season’s performance and showcase what he can do in a week.
Niko Gordon 5’10 185 Naperville Central HS Twitter Highlights
Mr. Gordon is from Naperville Central HS. He’s an N/S runner who can bounce plays outside with quick acceleration and reads his blocks. He’s a playmaker in both offensive attacks. In the running attack, he fights for extra yards, and in the passing attack, he secures the catch before planting his foot into the ground to get upfield. Overall, Gordon is going to be paired with Torres in the running attack this spring season, and look for him to take advantage of each snap he plays.
Corey Phillips 5’8 160 Kaneland HS Twitter Highlights
Mr. Phillips is from Kaneland HS. He’s an N/S runner who mixes in the E/W style too. He uses his elusiveness and jump cuts to make defenders miss a well as breaking arm tackles in the process. In the return game, he uses his speed to blow by defenders, and in the passing game, he can catch coming out of the backfield. Overall, it’s going to be exciting to see what Phillips can do during this spring season.
Derek Whaley 6’1 195 Mt. Carmel HS Twitter Highlights
Finishing off we have Mr. Whaley from Mt. Carmel HS. He hits the holes hard with his quick acceleration, reads his blocks, and can bounce plays outside. He uses his jump cuts to make the first defender miss which is seen in both the run and pass attack. He’s a hard runner who plays through contact fighting for extra yards and can catch coming out of the backfield. Overall, Whaley has untapped potential from last season and it will be a sight to see when the pads come on.
These RBs are in similar boats needing their junior year film before their recruiting takes off. Each of these players has the potential to play at the next level, the only thing that’s missing is the updated film from the spring season that’s starting March 19th.
