Not right now…
The peach state is absolutely loaded at the tight end in the 2022 class and the 2023 class isn’t far behind. As offenses across the state continue to develop and become more pass-happy, tall athletes who would normally play some tackle have moved a little outside and have become big weapons in the passing game.
We’ve seen some top tight ends become major D1 prospects over the last few years, but here are a few of the best currently in the state who happen to play down in South Georgia.
Landen Thomas – Colquitt County
A young tight end to know in the 2024 class is the ultra-athletic Landen Thomas from Moultrie. The small-town star is coming off a fantastic freshman season where he made an impact for one of the top programs in the state after going up against tough competition every week. He only caught a handful of passes last year, but it was enough to garner some real noise this off-season. The Packers are losing a ton of weapons from last year and will look to Thomas to step up and fill the void. He’s a big target already at 6-foot-5 215-pounds and he’s only going to get bigger and stronger over the next few years. He’s playing at a place with all types of resources, and his athleticism should make him one of the top go-to weapons on offense for the Packers in 2021. He has great hands, he has an impressive vertical, and he’s such a dangerous weapon in the red-zone. He’s bigger than most linebackers and can out-jump smaller defenders in jump-ball situations. Look for Thomas to be one of the breakout sophomore in the state this fall.
Tyrus Washington Tyrus Washington 6'4" | 230 lbs | TE Lee County | 2022 State GA – Lee County
The Lee County Trojans proves once again in 2020 that they are one of the more dominant football programs across the state, and they produce D1 talent as well as anyone in South Georgia. They were excellent on offense last year and a big reason why was the play of their big 6-foot-4 230-pound tight end. Not only does his frame and vertical allow him to be a major threat in the passing game, but he’s such an impact blocker as well in the run game. His physical nature and length allow him to dominate at times on the edge and did a great job of opening up holes for talented running back Caleb McDowell Caleb McDowell 5'10" | 170 lbs | RB Lee County | 2021 State GA . Washington already looks like an SEC tight end physically and is coming from a winning program that does things the right way. If the Trojans are looking to bounce back and win a state title in 2021, they’ll need another big season from Washington as both a blocker and a receiver.
Keion Wallace – Effingham
Down in Savannah is where you’ll find another jumbo-athlete who is looking for a breakout year in 2021. Wallace dominates both on the gridiron and on the basketball court, proving that he’s one of the top overall athletes in the region. At 6-foot-3 215-pounds, Wallace was a big weapon in the passing game last year as a sophomore where he caught 27 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns. His best game last season came in a close loss to rival Statesboro where he caught 10 passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns. As he continues to transform his body and put on muscle this offseason, Wallace has the potential to be an outstanding prospect with D1 potential. he’ll have two more years to show what he can do, and he’ll be given plenty of opportunities to make plays this fall as a junior.
