Like in Week 1, we saw some incredible performances in Week 2. So many, in fact, that I’ve decided to split this and future POTW features into two parts -- one of the offensive standouts and another for the top performers on the defensive side of the ball. As always, the more info I get from players, coaches and parents, the easier it is for me to highlight the top performers of the week.
More than just a rundown of the most rushing yards, receiving yards, tackles, etc. I want this to highlight players that made huge impacts the previous Friday and also raised their recruiting stock. So without further delay, here are my players of the week.
[player_tooltip player_id="44993" first="Tyler" last="Mizzell"], QB- East Lincoln
Stats: 13/17, 200 yards, 4 TDs
Mizzell lit up the scoreboard in a 41-0 win over rival Lincolnton, throwing as many touchdowns as incompletions. I’m a big fan of Mizzell’s throwing motion and he has a great arm for his size. He has the chance to be one of the better sophomore quarterbacks in the state.
Tye Saxby, QB- Hertford County
Stats: 16/24, 358 yards, 5 TDs
Saxby made our preseason All-State team after an impressive junior campaign and started his senior year with a bang. He completed passes to eight different receivers and touchdowns to five different players in a 41-10 win.
[player_tooltip player_id="44989" first="Jre" last="Jackson"], RB- Sanford
Stats: 23 carries, 316 yards, 2 TDs
I originally was naïve enough to think I’d never put a player on the list two weeks in a row, but I made an executive decision to include any player that runs for 300 yards in a game on the list. Jackson is a tough runner that never goes down on first contact.
Errasmus Chandler, RB- New Hanover
Stats: 44 carries, 340 yards, 5 TDs
Chandler also ran for 300 yards, adding five touchdowns along the way in a close loss to Topsail. Chandler’s speed made him nearly impossible to stop and New Hanover kept feeding him, leading to his huge game.
Sidney Lee, QB- White Oak
Stats: 8/16 117 yards, 14 carries, 247 yards, 6 Total TDs
In what may have been the craziest game of the weekend, Lee and White Oak fell just short in a 56-50 shoutout against James Kenan. Lee threw and ran for three touchdowns each in a superb game for the junior.
Allan Shade, RB- Newton-Conover
Stats: 27 carries, 221 yards, 4 TDs
I missed Shade last week, so he put together a second-straight 200-yard game. Shade is a patient runner, who waits for an opening before cutting upfield. He never seems to go down on first contact.
[player_tooltip player_id="28653" first="Darius" last="Kane"], WR- Eastern Alamance
Stats: 4 receptions, 173 yards, 3 TDs
Kane has seven receptions, 300 yards and six touchdowns on the season against good competition. He’s one of the best receivers in the state and continues to show that week in and week out, especially as a big-play threat.
Vic Garrido, QB- Pine Lake Prep
Stats: 420 passing yards, 6 TDs (School Record)
Garrido threw for a school record six touchdowns and then showed some versatility by running for four 2-point conversions. Garrido does a great job using his legs to buy himself time in the pocket before delivering an accurate ball on the run or after he resets his feet. A 2021 prospect, he’s a good student and still available.
JaDivion Coffee, Ath.- Forest Hills
Stats: Receiving TD, PR TD, interception
Coffee does it all for Forest Hills. We heard a lot about his potential in the offseason but it looks like that potential is turning into production. He had the play of the game in each of the three phases for the Yellow Jackets, scoring both touchdowns and picking off a pass to win the game.
[player_tooltip player_id="28539" first="TJ" last="Ruff"], RB- Crest
Stats: 264 yards, 4 TDs
Ruff had a huge night for Crest, running for 264 yards and four touchdowns in a big win over Stuart Cramer. It was the second-straight 200-yard game for Ruff, who has six touchdowns and nearly 500 yards on the season.
Other Big Performances
Wade Jarman, QB- J.H. Rose (410 yards, 5 TDs)
Brody Whitson, QB- T.C. Roberson (288 yards, 5 TDs, 28 rushing yards)
Blane Fulbright, RB- East Burke (24 carries, 240 yards, 2 TDs)
Jaden Lockhart, WR- Mt. Island Charter (4 receptions, 153 yards, 2 TDs)
[player_tooltip player_id="117961" first="Nolan" last="Hauser"], K- Hough (3/4 field goals, long 40, 4/4 PATs)
[player_tooltip player_id="28552" first="Davion" last="Nelson"], RB- Butler (25 carries, 184 yards, 4 TDs
Dalton Miller, RB- Mount Pleasant (23 carries, 151 yards, 3 TDs)
Connor Powe, WR- Laney (6 receptions, 177 yards, TD)
Owen Finley, WR- Ledford (3 receptions, 169 yards, 3 TDs)
Avante George, RB- Rosewood (222 total yards, 3 TDS)
