We all know and fully understand everything that has come with this pandemic, and because colleges and coaches have been off limits because of Covid, student/athletes have had a rough time.
With very few avenues to travel this year – with so many things going on – once again, it was comforting to have the Orange Bowl Showcase.
This event, for the past five years, has more than enhanced this recruiting experience – with small college coaches coming down to watch, meet and check out grades and finances.
These recruiting combines have become so vital, and with the Orange Bowl really upping the stakes, this has become a success.
On Saturday, qualified Class of 2021 student/athletes came from all over the state of Florida in search of that elusive scholarship – at St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens.
With coaches and instructors helping with the drills, instruction and things that the college coaches wanted to see, things moved along safely and smoothly as all athletes had the chance to showcase their skills in front of a lot of eyes who make the decision.
“This is certainly something that has been so successful – from every standpoint,” Orange Bowl President Jack Seiler pointed out. “We had young men who got it done in the classroom out here trying to make a lasting impression.”
With millions of dollars in scholarships available, it was well worth it for prospects such as Newberry safety Tyreke Williams, Niceville safety Michael Carruthers, Palm Beach Gardens cornerback Jakobe Hines, Spoto running back Derrick Meyers, Lake Worth defensive lineman Berlens Servil and Daytona Beach Mainland receiver Lucas Williamson.
For nearly five hours, the athletes had the opportunity to test their football skills as well as speak with college coaches who came from as far away as Wisconsin, Missouri, Michigan, Iowa and Pennsylvania – and as close as St. Thomas University, Florida Memorial University, Keiser University and ASA Academy to get a look a gifted talent that just needed to turn a head or two on this day.
“This is a great opportunity for these young men to come out here and continue to make their dreams come true,” Keiser University head coach Doug Socha. “This is such a tremendous annual event that is not only helping out of area colleges, but the state of Florida as well.”
Indeed, other schools such as Ave Maria, Warner and Webber International University were on hand – along with those schools such as Avila (Mo.) University, Westminster College (Pa.), Clark (Ia.) University and Beloit (Wi.) College.
Watching prospects such as receivers Jaquez Peacock (Tampa Middleton), Micah Forsythe (Leesburg) and Nate Johnson from Stuart Martin Couny.
This has always been one of those events that athletes come to because the Orange Bowl has always run a first class event – and from registration to the specialists – exposure and spotlight was indeed the order of the day.
