Here’s a detailed look into some of the top performers that are climbing the player rankings after a strong 2020 season. [player_tooltip player_id="100645" first="Shakaun" last="Bowser"], LB, Casteel, 6’4” 225 lbs. Shakaun has quickly climbed the rankings and become one of the top LB prospects in the state. Since September he has pulled in 7 D1 offers including Colorado, Arizona, Iowa State, Kansas, and most recently Utah State. Ideal size and length for a LB at 6’4” 225 lbs. He’s a versatile LB with the ability to be effective in run support, coverage, or as a pass rusher off the edge. Shows off his quickness, athleticism, and speed in a variety of ways. He’s a strong and physical tackler that drives his legs through contact and has the ability to make plays sideline to sideline. He has tremendous upside given his natural talent and will continue to climb recruiting boards as he develops. [player_tooltip player_id="100647" first="Russell" last="Davis"], DL, Hamilton, 6’3” 215 lbs. A key piece to the tough Hamilton defense that led them to the State Championship game. A strong natural skill set with good physical tools to build on at 6’3” 215 lbs. Great initial quickness off the LOS and response to movement make him extremely difficult to get in front of and block for the OL. Shows plus lateral agility and bend to shed a block then work down the line or the backfield to make a tackle. Great nose for the ball and is relentless in pursuit of the ball carrier. Makes a ton of plays at or behind the line of scrimmage evident by his 13.5 sacks and 19 TFL in 2020. Picked up an offer from in-state Arizona but won’t be long until he adds to that list as he develops and adds weight. [player_tooltip player_id="100648" first="Daniel" last="Santiago"], DL, Horizon, 6’2” 290 lbs. A transfer in from New York where he was an all-state lineman. The move has paid dividends after a strong 2020 season he has seen his recruiting stock on the rise with recent offers coming in from Arizona and Army. He has a well-built frame for 290 lbs. that creates mismatches using his natural power and strength at the POA. Shows plus feet, mobility, and bend for an interior defensive lineman that allows him to effectively redirect and pursue ball carriers all over the field. He has a great ability to neutralize blocks and establish leverage on a blocker using his brute strength and balance. He’s a strong and violent tackler that explodes through contact. He’s a high effort guy with good all around talent for the D1 level. [player_tooltip player_id="42845" first="Logan" last="Hubler"], QB, American Leadership Academy (QC), 6’2” 180 lbs. Hubler had a monster junior year throwing for over 2,500 yards and 29 touchdowns with a 118 QBR on his way to being named the regions offensive player of the year. Listed as a pro-style QB with a thin lean frame at 6’2” 180 lbs. he is also a deceptive athlete capable of making plays with his legs. He shows great pocket mobility and movement by being able to manipulate pressure, extend plays, and create open throwing lanes. He’s a heady QB that makes quick decisive reads and decisions while going through his progression. As a passer, he’s accurate, precise, and on time showing a good ability to anticipate coverage and hit his target in stride. He has the D1 talent and ability, with a little added weight and development he could start to see increased recruiting attention. [player_tooltip player_id="42857" first="Lance" last="Holtzclaw"], ATH, Desert Ridge, 6’4” 200 lbs. A solid versatile athlete capable of playing either side of the ball at the college level given his ability and size at 6’4” 200 lbs. He’s a natural football player with a great feel and awareness for the game. He has a great combination of pure athleticism and sound fundamentals/technique. Physical skillset includes plus speed, burst, lateral agility, and leaping ability. The Massachusetts native was first offered by Boston College but has just scratched the surface in terms of his potential and upside given his length and versatility. It will be interesting to see how he develops but expect his recruiting to take off either way. [player_tooltip player_id="42840" first="Jacob" last="Holmes"], DL, Cesar Chavez, 6’4” 285 lbs. [caption id="attachment_69083" align="alignright" width="300"] Photo: Twitter[/caption] Ideal size, frame, and length for a college level defensive lineman at 6’4” 285 lbs. For his size, he possesses great athleticism and mobility. He’s light on his feet and shows plus lateral agility to work around blockers and down the LOS. Puts himself in good position early with a quick and aggressive first step off the ball. He’s powerful at the POA with the ability to stack and neutralize blocks or overpower opponents given his natural arm and leg strength. Shows violent hands with good placement and ability to quickly re-locate and gain leverage on his opponent. Great foundation to build at the college level and is a very recruitable player given his size and athleticism.
