Continue ReadingReceivers have become an increasingly important position given the style of air raid offense that the game has evolved to thanks to great players like Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. These are just five potentially electric receivers for next season to keep an eye out for.
1. Ethan Gonzales – Stevens High School (San Antonio, TX)
Finishing the season with 82 receptions for 1,149 yards and seven touchdowns, Gonzales is among the top receivers in the Central Texas area, and especially in San Antonio. On another note, his quarterback, sophomore Kevin Brashears will be entering his junior season next year, so the duo will be united for one more season. Considering how much Brashears threw to Gonzales this past season, it is a safe bet that he will look to him once again.
2. Troy Oliver Jr. – Rouse High School (Leander, TX)
One of two Rouse receivers to watch for is Oliver, who had 54 receptions for 1,002 yards and 12 touchdowns. Rouse was among the many teams in Central Texas that threw the ball often with sophomore quarterback Mason Shorb leading the way. Considering Shorb will be entering his junior season, and will have most of his favorite targets, the Rouse team will continue to sling the ball often, giving both Oliver and his teammate Becerra lots of opportunities.
3. Jalen Becerra – Rouse High School (Leander, TX)
For Becerra, he finished the year with 42 receptions for 921 yards and 13 touchdowns. Both he and Oliver led the way with 25 combined receiving touchdowns on the season, but more importantly, both displayed how much Shorb likes throwing to either. Since the Rouse receiving corps will mostly stay intact, the chemistry between the receivers and the quarterback will only improve. Both Oliver and Becerra are a duo to watch for next season given the potential for Rouse to have a special season since all the cards are in the Raiders’ favor.
4. Michael Sedwick – East View High School (Georgetown, TX)
Speaking of potential, Sedwick offers a lot of potential as he enters his senior season next year. He finished the 2020 season with 39 receptions for 729 yards and 11 touchdowns. While he did not stack up as many yards as others on this list, he scored plenty of times, almost as much as Oliver and Becerra. With age comes experience, and as a senior, he will have learned many things from this past year to prepare to play lights out for his final year of high school ball. Time will tell, but he has a lot of potential with an East View team that can always surprise.
5. Che Nwabuko – Manor High School (Manor, TX)
Although Manor struggled this season, another potential builder is Nwabuko. In what has been recorded on MaxPreps, he finished the year with 42 receptions for 700 yards and six touchdowns. Manor has a long way to go to create an impact as a team, but a big start could be Nwabuko, who has the tools, which he has already shown, to be a major playmaker next season. However, Manor does focus on the running game more often, but a tone change can always happen during the offseason and Nwabuko could get more receiving opportunities.
