Schools are moving around their recruiting boards daily, prospects are taking PWO offers instead of scholarship offers to smaller schools and prospects possibly didn’t finish the semester with the grades to attend the school they were committed to. Due to this constant ever-changing recruiting landscape, over the next 6 weeks leading up to National Signing Day, unexpected offers will roll out and prospects will be offered scholarships they either weren’t expecting or that were a long time coming.
These instabilities in the recruiting game are especially prominent within the quarterback position due to position depth and allowance on a roster, especially in the COVID-19 riddled 200-2021 recruiting cycle. Here is a list of some of the top dual-threat quarterbacks that Northern California has to offer that have not yet signed with a school, but have college level talent at the FBS-DIII level.
DJ Stevenson, Central-Fresno HS
The recent transfer to Central from Buchanan High School, currently holds one offer from Eastern New Mexico and is one of the top dual-threat QB’s in the Central Valley. On tape, Stevenson has good pocket presence and awareness, with the ability to escape from all angles and use his long strides, vision and lateral agility to make big plays. Displaying a longer release progression, Stevenson throws a nice deep ball with good velocity and throws his receivers open across the field while doing a good job at looking off defenders and scanning the field and going through his full progression. His combination of arm talent and escapability makes him an intriguing prospect that can make an impact at the next level.
Anthony Grigsby, Cosumnes Oaks HS
Operating one of the most explosive offenses in the San Joaquin Section during the 2019 season, Grigsby is a true dual-threat prospect that currently holds offers from Idaho, Black Hills State, Missouri State, Eastern and New Mexico, among others. During his Junior season, he threw for 2,700+ yards and tacked on another 300+ on the ground with 30+ total touchdowns. On tape, Grigsby flashes a quick release and has a good overall awareness of where he is in the pocket and where the pressure is coming from. He has a nice touch on his intermediate and deep balls and throws the ball with good velocity downfield ahead of his targets. He also displays good zip on the ball when throwing to underneath receivers or in tight windows. On the ground, Grigsby is very dynamic and has a quick burst to escape the pocket with the agility, awareness and balance to make big plays in the open field.
Shamoun Duncan-Niusulu, James Logan HS
Shamoun is an extremely talented athlete that can play all over the field at the next level and on both sides of the ball. During his Junior season, he showcased his ability to effectively run the ball and move well for his size with good downfield speed, balance and body control through traffic. Having a well put-together frame along with a strong arm and an accurate deep ball placement, Duncan-Niusulu also shined on defense from his safety position. On defense, he shows excellent range, natural ball skills, a quick trigger and brings a good thump at the point of attack while taking good angles to ball carriers in the box and in space. As we draw closer to National Signing Day, he should see schools start to offer him late, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Tyler Kaschweski, Templeton HS
Although playing for a small school power, Kaschweski was one of the most dominant and explosive playmakers in all of Norcal during the 2019 season regardless of position. Scoring 40+ touchdowns and gaining over 3,000 all-purpose yards for the Eagles, he displayed his unique ability to make big plays in the run game. More quick than fast, he has great lateral agility and start/stop ability in traffic to go along with a strong lower body that allows him to break ankle and arm tackles. Having good balance and a natural forward lean, the tough, explosive and big-play Central Coast Section product will look to build upon his terrific Junior year and take the Eagles deep into the playoff’s once again.
Caleb Ojeda, Live Oak HS
Ojeda projects as an inside WR at the next level, but plays all over the field for Live Oak High School, including quarterback. During his Junior season, Ojeda operated and did most of his damage on the ground while running the read option, zone read and quarterback power and displayed a good combination of initial acceleration and has sneaky top end speed that constantly forced defenders to under-cut him in the open field. Having a good combination of vision and patience allowing his blocks to develop while getting North and South in a hurry, Ojeda runs tough for his size and is an extremely smart player who makes the right reads and takes care of the football. Although not a natural passer, he is a true playmaker that can play on both sides of the ball and will make an impact at the next level.
