Blessed with sub-4.5 speed in the 40, 2021 Cleveland Storm standout receiver [player_tooltip player_id="26158" first="Luke" last="Wysong"] recalls the exact moment he began to make waves on the recruiting trail.
During the summer of 2019, he attended a camp at TCU and ran the 40 in 4.46 seconds and showed soft hands catching the football along with the ability to run crisp routes.
Quickly, schools such as New Mexico began contacting him. A Lobo assistant on the former staff began to visit the school and watch him workout in the weight room.
When the new Lobos staff came aboard in January, they contacted Wysong and expressed even stronger interest. The Lobos offered in March as well as Eastern New Mexico. Northern Arizona contacted him as well.
“I started putting myself out on Twitter and going to football camps,” Wysong told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “Some of the coaches started following me. All of a sudden, I got my UNM offer in the morning and later that same day I got an offer from Eastern (New Mexico). It all happened pretty fast.”
Wysong verbally committed to UNM on April 3, weeks after getting the offer from the Lobos.
“I made my decision early because I knew that’s where I wanted to go, especially with all the new coaches,” Wysong said. “I didn’t want to waste my time with any other school.”
Wednesday, Wysong signed with the Lobos on the first day of the early signing period, one of four New Mexico prospects to sign letters of intent with UNM and 10 overall to sign with Division I programs.
Wysong plans to stay at Cleveland for the spring semester and play football for the Storm before joining the Lobos football program next summer. He’ll also run track for the Lobos in the spring as a sprinter.
Wysong was recruited by UNM to play the slot receiver position.
“My speed is definitely a major factor in why the Lobos were interested in me,” Wysong said. “But I also think I’m pretty good with the ball in my hands and very coachable. I love to catch the ball. It’s one of my passions. I enjoy it a lot.”
When he joins the Lobos, Wysong could soon be catching passes from former Rio Rancho QB Isaiah Chavez, who led UNM to a pair of victories over Wyoming and Fresno State in their final two games.
Wysong and Chavez were once cross-town rivals on the football field, notably last fall’s Class 6A state championship game, but in a matter of months they will be teammates.
“Being able to play with each other as opposed to against each other will be fun,” Wysong said. “I get along well with a lot of people. I like to be social. I want to learn from them and bring everything together in college. I’m looking forward to it.”
