CANISTOTA/FREEMAN-- With this recruiting report, you are in for a treat. We connected with one of the best South Dakota 9-man football players over the last few seasons in Canistota-Freeman Pride athlete [player_tooltip player_id="56280" first="Tyce" last="Ortman"]. We chatted about his skill set, his recruiting, and much more. We will say Ortman won’t have to have the #52mentality much longer when it comes to our rankings.
Get to Know [player_tooltip player_id="56280" first="Tyce" last="Ortman"]
Ortman and his football club have now won three straight 9A championships in South Dakota, showing that Ortman is nothing but a proven winner on the football field. Ortman has a team-first mentality making some switches this year to Quarterback and Linebacker after being a three-position player at running back, wide receiver, and defensive back his sophomore and junior seasons. At the next level, Ortman wishes to play either running back or defensive back but is open to anywhere.
People from outside of Canistota or Freeman should know that Ortman is "the hardest worker out there," which he lived up to that workhorse mentality watching this year’s state final. Orman stated, "I may not be the most athletic, strongest, fastest guy on the field, but I will outwork my opponent. I am a winner. I will do whatever it takes to win."
At linebacker Ortman’s biggest strengths are getting downhill fast and my tackling ability. As for a running quarterback, Ortman’s strengths is how patient he is with his runs and his vision between the tackles.
Favorites
At linebacker, Ortman loves being around the football. "As a linebacker, you are in on every play and get to hit someone on every down," Ortman said about his liking for the LB position. As for quarterback, Ortman loves that he gets to touch the ball every down, and it’s 100% up to him on what he wants to do with the football as QB1.
Recruiting Trail
Ortman currently holds four NAIA offers, but he’s not entirely wrapped up his recruiting just yet. "I am still having conversations with SDSU, Northern State, and Mount Marty," Ortman said about who is still in the mix without an offer.
Elevator Pitch
Here’s what [player_tooltip player_id="56280" first="Tyce" last="Ortman"] had to say to the college coaches reading this on what he can bring to their program.
I am a winner. I do what it takes to win. I have experienced 3 state championships and have won all of those. I have played multiple positions and have been very successful at every one of them. I am the hardest worker on the field or in the weight room. I may not be the best football player or the most athletic, but I will outwork you.
Work Ons
The Canistota-Freeman coaching staff hinted at Ortman’s speed and quickness going into the offseason as his work ons. Last offseason, Ortman would head to the field and do ladder drills, cone drills, and sprints. Ortman, this offseason, will be working with a trainer to get his speed and quickness at an even higher level for college football.
Tyce’s Mentors
When Tyce thinks about football, he thinks about the mentors he has in his life that helped him become a 3-time state champion. Tyce first thinks of his dad, how he is his day one and has never left his side. He thinks about his head coach James Strang, who has taught him many things about the game of football, including the ins and outs of how to become the best player I can be. Ortman’s last mentor is his offseason trainer Paul, who played college football at South Dakota, and will work hard with Tyce to prepare him for college football next year.
Learning about Yourself
What Ortman learned this season about himself as a football player and a person is that he has the "never give up" mentality. Ortman is a player that will play till the final whistle and do whatever it takes to win. Ortman knows he needs to get faster and quicker as he makes the transition to college football. His goals going into his freshman year of college are getting faster and more explosive with his runs.
Biggest Thing Ortman Wants in CFB
Ortman looks to continue his winning mentality. He hopes to run with a program that will do whatever it takes to win.
