Northwestern State in Natchitoches will host the LHSAA’s Prep Classic event — as opposed to its usual home at the Superdome in New Orleans — because of concerns related to COVID-19.
But, for all the abnormalities and adjustments, the significance, excitement and levels of talent remain high as ever.
Prep Redzone Louisiana will look at three to seven of each matchup’s remaining unsigned and uncommitted prospects.
Division IV
No. 1 Calvary Baptist vs. No. 3 Ouachita Christian
Tuesday, 1 p.m.
The top-seeded Cavaliers and the reigning champion Eagles, each led by Division-I quarterbacks, figure to be one of the sneaky fun matchups of the championship week.
Calvary Baptist junior Landry Lyddy and Ouachita Christian senior Hunter Herring Hunter Herring 6'4" | 205 lbs | QB Ouachita Christian | 2021 State LA , a Louisiana (Lafayette) signee, are two of the top quarterbacks in the state and appear poised to provide the fans at Northwestern State in Natchitoches a track meet reminiscent of last season’s 49-47 playoff thriller.
And they have plenty of weapons at their disposal to live up to that billing.
2021 Recruiting Class
Dillon Dougan — 6-0, 185 RB — Ouachita Christian
Louisiana (Lafayette) quarterback commitment Hunter Herring Hunter Herring 6'4" | 205 lbs | QB Ouachita Christian | 2021 State LA is the straw that stirs the OCS offensive drink, but coach Steven Fitzhugh and company couldn’t have asked for a much better complement in the backfield than his fellow senior. Dougan has been a productive runner all season, including a 25-carry, 148-yard performance in the state semifinal survival of Vermilion Catholic.
Aidan Ham — 6-1, 195 ATH — Ouachita Christian
The only other member of the the reigning champions’ team with reported scholarship offers — from Louisiana College, Trinity International and Bethel (Kansas) — is a versatile prospect on both sides of the ball, whether as a safety or tight end in high school. He’s had half a dozen tackles the past two playoff games and is always willing to hit and also swiped an interception during the Eagles’ run.
Jordan Wallace — 5-9, 145 WR — Calvary Baptist
The senior receiver has compiled impressive numbers for even a typical season, let alone a COVID-shortened campaign. Wallace has hauled in 46 receptions for 1,337 yards and 15 touchdowns in just 10 games for averages of 29.1 yards per catch and 133.7 yards per game. His only known offer thus far is Western New Mexico, but another big game in the brightest spotlight of his career thus far appears likely Tuesday.
2022 Recruiting Class
Landry Lyddy — 6-0, 180 QB — Calvary Baptist
Even in the adjusted season, the junior passer’s highly anticipated first year as the varsity starter has lived up to lofty expectations. Lyddy has completed 140 of 216 passes (64.8 percent) for 3,102 yards, 39 touchdowns and three interceptions in 10 games for averages of more than 310 yards and nearly four touchdowns per contest.
Miles Williams — 6-2, 226 TE — Calvary Baptist
Another junior provides Lyddy an occasional big target between undersized speedsters Joseph Wilson Joseph Wilson 5'10" | 180 lbs | ATH Calvary Baptist | 2021 State LA and Jordan Wallace, as well as being an athletic edge rusher on the defensive side of the ball. His numbers don’t pop off the page the way those teammates’ do, but his better size could set him up to gain some recruiting momentum this offseason or with a bigger senior season. And he could be an interesting weapon to watch in this championship game to make the most of opportunities when attention focuses elsewhere and help be somewhat of a springboard moving forward.
2024 Recruiting Class
Noah Lovelady — 6-1, 195 LB — Ouachita Christian
The freshman linebacker already has some of the Eagles’ best size for his position — particularly consider his three years left of high school growth — and already flies all over the field to be the reigning state champions’ leading tackler most evenings out. He will be tested around the middle of the field in this one, with plenty of opportunities to help get involved with pass breakups or big hits at that next level.
