Fantasy football players know all about the value of “keepers”, players they are allowed to keep on their roster from one season to the next. Here are some players that caught my eye as being ones any coach would be thankful to have on their roster in the latest edition of Kovo Keepers.
D’Shawn Winfield (SR c/o2021 FS #21) – 5’8″ 157 (4.0 – GPA) (1120 – SAT) – Morton Ranch
This was my 5th time to see Morton Ranch play this year so I feel qualified to say that when you see a Morton Ranch game you will walk away knowing the name D’Shawn Winfield. A senior captain who plays free safety and returns kicks, D’Shawn does it all for the Mavericks. Very intelligent player who is always around the ball. Good tackler who is capable of racking up double-digit tackles; adept at being in position to help from his free safety spot versus the pass. Plays with passion and is a leader as evidenced by being named a captain.
Jaymarcus Wilson (SR c/o 2021 CB/QB #3) – 5’9″ 155 – Morton Ranch
Wilson was the returning starter at QB coming into his senior season and looked good early on in the year. Possesses great decisiveness, as evidenced by his ability to pull the ball down and scramble for big first downs. Effective passer as well, however dealt with injury throughout a large portion of his senior season and transitioned away from playing QB. Excellent cornerback as well: possesses top-end speed and excellent ball skills. Had a big interception and PBU in his last game against Clear Brook. Jaymarcus was also a team captain and leader.
Devin Winfield (SR c/o 2021 SS #28) – 5’8” 198 (3.2 – GPA) – Morton Ranch
As I mentioned earlier anytime you go to a Morton Ranch game you will hear the name Winfield a lot over the PA system. To be more accurate, it’s really the Winfield boys as there are a pair of DBs in the Morton Ranch secondary with the name Winfield. Devin Winfield is the twin brother of the aforementioned D’Shawn and is a very accomplished player in his own right. More powerfully built than his brother D’Shawn, Deven is a true “thumper” in every sense of the word and seems to love contact and is a big hitter. Very involved in the run game from his OLB/SS spot in the Mavericks’ 4-2-5 scheme.
Jaysen Price (SR c/o 2021 WR #7) – 5’8” 165 (4.4 – 40) (235 – Bench) – Clear Brook
Does it all for the Wolverines, lightning-quick receiver and return man, and extremely effective as a Wildcat QB scoring a TD on a QB counter against Morton Ranch. Has good speed, hands, and ball skills. Has an effective jump cut in his arsenal that can usually make the first man miss after the catch.
Quintin Effinger (SR c/2021 OG #76) – 5’10″ 275 (5.71 – 40) (335 – Bench) (4.2 – GPA) (1170 – SAT) – Clear Brook
Unquestioned leader on the offensive line who was a 24-6A 2nd team all-district pick as a junior in 2019. Good all-around player with good strength, footwork, and aggressiveness. The thing that impressed me the most was in the last game of his high school career against Morton Ranch he logged a lot of time at DT and was effective there as well which is a testament to his athleticism and stamina. Perhaps more importantly it shows to me that he said, “coach I’ll play every snap if you need me to, whatever you need to help the team”. It’s guys like Quintin that are true Keepers that you want to have on your side!
Jim Rivera (JR c/o 2022 OL #77) – 5’9″ 220 – Clear Brook
Jim is the textbook definition of the type of kids I look for in the Kovo Keepers segment. As a former undersized offensive lineman myself I get fired up watching kids like him get after it! After quickly falling behind 28-0 in their game against Morton Ranch, the Wolverines were able to settle things down in large part by running counter. From his RT spot Rivera showed off his athleticism as he pulled around on counter and consistently got up to the 2nd level. Even more impressive is what he did when he got there: staying on and finishing blocks with a great mean streak. He’s got the athleticism and the “want-to” to be a highly effective offensive lineman and the kind of kid that you want on your side. When you look up Rivera’s Hudl profile he has a quote that says, “play to the whistle and lil bit after it too”,….couldn’t have said it better myself young man!
