Continue ReadingThere are so many worthy players who deserve recognition and more articles will be coming soon about these underclassmen who fought through one of the craziest seasons ever in high school football. Some of these players were able to play a full schedule while others lost games to COVID rules. As a former player and scout, but as a coach and a father, thank you all for battling each and every week.
For those of you not on this list, you are not being overlooked. You just need to decide how bad you want to be on this team next year and make Prep Redzone take notice of your game.
QB Reagan Andrew, MICDS (2022)–Coaches talk about the ’it’ factor. What the junior lacks in height, he makes up for in moxie, toughness, leadership, and accuracy. Became the leader of a team that marched all the way to the state championship game.
QB Patrick Heitert Patrick Heitert 6'0" | 190 lbs | QB CBC | 2022 State MO , CBC (2022)– Heitert didn’t start the season as the man behind center but he sure did finish in a flurry. After taking control of the reins at CBC, Heitert put his stamp on the record books and has a huge upside heading into 2021.
QB Taron Peete, Duchesne (2024)– The upside on this young buck is astronomical! I know he made some All-State lists as a defensive back but the only lists I use are the ones I make. Peete can play QB and as a true freshman, he put his team in a position to win each week.
QB Cooper Brown Cooper Brown 6'3" | 205 lbs | QB Holt | 2022 State MO , Holt (2022)– Maybe the most college-ready player in the 2022 QB class, Brown had a highly efficient year in 2021. If not for COVID issues, Brown could have led Holt on a long playoff run. Brown has good size, a live arm, and is accurate. His 32 TDs to 8 interception ratio speaks to his pinpoint accuracy.
RB Jackson Overton, St. Dominic (2023)– Overton may not be the biggest player on this list, but he would compete as the speediest and quickest. Incredibly shifty in the hole, Overton used good vision and top-end speed to put together a heck of a sophomore season.
RB Arlen Harris, Jr, St. Charles Lutheran (2022)– One of the most elite players in the country let alone state or city, Harris was dynamic in 2020. The recent Stanford commit runs with patient, poise, and balance.
RB Ali Wells Ali Wells 6'0" | 170 lbs | RB Lutheran North | 2022 IL , Lutheran North (2022)– Another all-around fantastic player, Wells catches the ball easily, is smooth with the football in his hands, and seems to glide as a runner. Wells has every offer a young player could want and will continue to ascend as he works on his craft.
WR Jackson Smith Jackson Smith 5'9" | 175 lbs | WR Holt | 2022 State MO , Holt (2022)– The favorite target of Cooper Brown Cooper Brown 6'3" | 205 lbs | QB Holt | 2022 State MO , Smith put together a solid junior season. Smith wins off the line of scrimmage using pitter-patter steps to set up the defensive back. Quick to pluck the football out of the air, Smith is extremely effective on quick-hitting passes.
WR Luther Burden Luther Burden 6'2" | 185 lbs | WR East St Louis | 2022 State IL , Cardinal Ritter (2022)– A physically gifted talent, Burden took over games for CRCP in 2021. Burden, a recent Oklahoma commit, has size, speed, and play-making ability. He is still getting better as a route runner. Burden will only get better.
WR Kevin Coleman Kevin Coleman 5'11" | 170 lbs | WR St. Mary's | 2022 State MO , St. Mary’s (2022)– Coleman is flat-out special. As a slot receiver, lined up wide or even out of the backfield, the St. Mary’s junior is electric with the football in his hands. The number one ranked 2022 receiver in the state is a force to be reckoned with and is still ascending as a player.
WR Caleb Merritt Caleb Merritt 6'0" | 190 lbs | WR John Burroughs | 2022 State MO , John Burroughs (2022)– A week 2 MVP, Merritt had success all season both on offense and defense. As a highly ranked player not only by Prep Redzone but nationally, Merritt has the speed, short-area quickness, and poise to be one of the best players to ever come out of St. Louis.
TE Kaian Roberts-Day Kaian Roberts-Day 6'4" | 255 lbs | TE Festus | 2022 State MO , Festus (2022)– Roberts-Day made the move to Festus from Joplin before the season and his presence led Festus to one of their best seasons in school history. The rocked-up junior can play running back, tight end, line up wide, and is a beast on defense as well. Though committed to Baylor, other college programs have taken notice of the talent and will be flocking to school to woo the supreme athlete.
ATH Laterrion West Laterrion West 5'7" | 180 lbs | RB Orchard Farms | 2022 State MO , Orchard Farms (2022)– All he wanted and begged for was a chance to play. Once given the opportunity, West never let go. A week 5 MVP, West followed that game up with dominant play that set the Orchard Farms record books on fire. West is shifty, runs under his pads well and always seems to keep his balance on contact.
OL Jimmy Lansing Jimmy Lansing 6'7" | 300 lbs | OL Chaminade | 2022 State MO , Chaminade (2022)– A gentle giant off the field, Lansing drops the hammer on defenders once on the turf. A big man who still has yet to stop growing, Lansing has learned to move his feet quickly and is exceptional as a pulling player. His ability to adjust his body in space to make the block is a tough skill set but one Lansing has learned well. Lansing has major upside in terms of recruiting.
OL Andrew Bontrager Andrew Bontrager 6'5" | 285 lbs | OL Timberland | 2022 State MO , Timberland (2022)– Getting a chance to play in 2021 made all the difference for the Timberland junior. Always one of the bigger kids, Bontrager turned himself into a blocking machine. Using improved flexibility and technique work, Bontrager took his game to a new level in 2020 and is still ascending.
OL Grant Litteken Grant Litteken 6'3" | 290 lbs | OL Francis Howell | 2022 MO , Francis Howell (2022)– Get used to hearing the name Litteken as recruiting starts to heat up. The Francis Howell offensive linemen is versatile, tough, and has excellent leadership qualities.
OL Bryce Parson, CBC (2024)– Only a freshman, Parson had some bumps along the way in 2021. But he also flashed power, finish and leverage to open up holes and keep his QB clean. Parson will become one of the most highly sought-out offensive linemen in St. Louis in the next few seasons.
OL Bryson Rolle, DeSmet Jesuit (2023)– The first-year starter stepped into a veteran’s role as a sophomore and more than held his own. Improving his snaps throughout the season, Rolle is quick to advance and block at the second level and loves to convert blocks into pancakes.
