However, going into this game, Vandegrift how a big challenge in stopping Round Rock senior running back Israel Morgan, who finished the night rushing for 237 yards and two touchdowns. Once again, Morgan has yet to be held under 100 yards and has yet to not be allowed to score a touchdown in a game. Despite Vandegrift’s best efforts, Morgan could not be denied and now has a total of 1,428 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns this season. It seems no defense is capable of stopping this scoring machine despite the talent on the other side of the ball.
Round Rock did not do much passing in the game since senior quarterback Seth Ford only threw it eight times for a total of 51 yards. However, Ford did plenty of running as he racked up 90 yards and two touchdowns in 12 carries. Both he and Morgan were solely responsible for the points scored for Round Rock, showcasing just how dominant the Dragons are running the ball. Vandegrift does not have a bad defense but the Vipers just could not contain both of these athletes.
For Vandegrift, senior quarterback Ryan Back did a bit of rushing himself as he scored a rushing touchdown and scored a passing touchdown, late in the game with just 50 seconds to go. The throw was to sophomore quarterback Brayden Buchanan for the tie, which sent the game into overtime. Senior running back Bowen Lewis was the other score for the Vipers when he plowed through the Round Rock defense to get to the endzone.
Defensively, the Dragons found success against Vandegrift as both junior linebacker Carter Wagner and senior defensive lineman Luke Dodds both had two sacks in the game. Junior defensive lineman Isaac Urquidi also had a sack in the game.
Both teams have one more game for the regular season. Vandegrift hosts Stony Point at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 27, and Round Rock hosts Westwood at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4. Both teams will be ones to watch in the playoffs given the way they both have played this season and the amount of talent on both teams.
*Vandegrift has not posted its stats at the time of writing this, therefore the numbers for the Vipers are not included in this recap.
