It’s always tough for freshmen to come in and make an impact on varsity, but there are four who have made themselves known early on.
Debron Gatling: ATH, Milton
The future is very bright for the WR/DB for the 7A Milton Eagles. Milton is loaded with talent as a state title contender this year, but it hasn’t stopped the 6-foot-1 180-pound WR from making lots of plays here in 2022. Some of his strengths are his attention to detail in route running, his work ethic, and his understanding of space and how to find openings in underneath coverage. He has a knack for catching the ball outside of the framework of his body but controlling his body at the same time. A lot of his catches are high balls where he was able to catch on the run but maintain balance at the same time.
The Eagles have a fantastic rushing attack led by junior Jordan McDonald, but if they want to make a deep playoff run, they’ll need to be explosive through the air as well, and Gatling gives them the ability to do so. The talented freshman currently holds offers from Georgia and Texas A&M.
Chase McCravy, QB, Hillgrove
If there’s an early QB to know in the 2024 class, it’s the 6-foot-0 175-pounder from Cobb County. He’s not a full-starer yet as he still shares snaps with a senior, but it’s clear to see that McCravy is the future at Hillgrove. McCravy’s best game so far came against a really talented Westlake defense where he was 14/19 for 289 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-21 win. He’s got an accurate arm and shows great footwork for someone his age. He’s technically sound, he has a quick release, and his arm will get stronger as he gets older and his arm continues to develop.
Bryce Clavon, QB, Dutchtown
Another QB to know in 2024 is Clavon, and the dual-sport has a chance to be special in both football and baseball. Already an Oklahoma commitment, the 5-foot-11 165-pounder has a great arm and elite athleticism. He’s not the starting varsity QB just yet, but he’s the backup and developing his first year on junior varsity. He has the speed and ball skills to make a big impact at receiver, but the arm talent is too much to ignore. He has the physical tools and athleticism to be as good as he wants over the next few years. He is expected to be one of the top football and baseball prospects in the 2024 class, so he should be fun to watch over the next four years.
Hevin Brown-Shuler – DL – Pace Academy
A standout defender to know in 2024 is the big 6-foot-5 260-pound from Atlanta. He’s a hard-working prospect who has an incredibly high ceiling as an elite pass rusher. He already looks like a high school senior from a physical standpoint, and he’s making a name for himself earn on the field. He has a great spin move, and he’s a natural at getting after the passer. Brown-Shuler is a former middle-school star and has excelled in every youth program he’s been part of over the last few years. The sky is the limit for Brown-Shuler, who already holds offers from Georgia, Tennessee, and Arkansas. He’ll have an offer from just about every major program in the country sooner than later and will push for 5-star status down the road.
