Colquitt County/Lowndes Winner Could Be State’s Top Team

The big South Georgia matchup we’ve all been waiting for is finally here. The 6-0 Lowndes Vikings take on the 5-0 Colquitt County Packers in a battle between two of the top overall teams in the state. The Vikings have been impressive all season led by junior QB [player_tooltip player_id="33889" first="Jacurri" last="Brown"], but it’s their defense that played even better. The Vikings have given up 20+ points only twice this season, and their best effort might have been last week against Tift County in a tough 17-13 win. The Packers are coming off last weekend’s 34-13 beatdown of Camden County, thanks for a big performance from QB Xavier Williams, who threw for 141 yards and one TD while rushing for 154 yards and 2 TDs. Williams had a 71-yard TD and a 62-yard TD on the night. Williams has led the Packers to a great season offensively, helping put up 51, 62, and 63 points in three of their five wins. Junior TE/DE [player_tooltip player_id="33897" first="Ontavious" last="Carolina"] also had a good game in last week’s win over Camden, recording 2 catches, 2 sacks, 4 tackles, and a blocked FG. The winner of this game will likely win 7A Region 1, once of the toughest regions in the entire state. Both teams have state title aspirations, and the winner will have an easier path through the playoffs when the time comes. If you’re in South Georgia, this is a game you can’t miss this weekend. The winner could very well play powerful Grayson in the state title game. &nbsp; Speaking of Grayson, the Rams are coming off an impressive win over rival Parkview last weekend, and they’ll have another tough region game this weekend against 6-1 Brookwood. The Broncos have a high-powered offense led by sophomore QB [player_tooltip player_id="34009" first="Dylan" last="Lonergan"], and while he has multiple weapons to throw too, it won’t be easy against the Rams defense. The matchup to watch in this one will be Brookwood’s wide receivers against Grayson’s defensive backs. The Broncos have wideouts Denylon Morrissette and Sam Mbake, and both of them are juniors who hold SEC offers. The Rams will have sophomore CB [player_tooltip player_id="34014" first="Michael" last="Daugherty"] and senior CB <a class="Anchor__StyledAnchor-sc-1fyvlgd-0 dHQTpJ" href="https://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/mumu-bin-wahad/cyg6XGIYEemA0ZFtwg1OMQ/default.htm">Mumu Bin-wahad</a> lined up against them the entire night. While the Broncos have a pass-happy offense that has been tough to stop, the Rams offense is also one of the states best. Senior Jake Garcia got his feet wet in the Rams offense last week, and the USC Trojan commit should see more playing time this weekend. He’ll get his opportunities to throw it downfield, but it won’t be easy completing passes against Brookwood DB [player_tooltip player_id="33860" first="Marquis" last="Groves-Killebrew"], a four-star junior headed to UGA. In the end, the Rams will try to keep the ball on the ground with four-star [player_tooltip player_id="33678" first="Phil" last="Mafah"], a future Clemson Tiger and one of the top running back prospects in the South. &nbsp; In metro-Atlanta, a matchup to watch in Cobb County is Hillgrove and North Cobb. The 7A Region 3 game should be a good one as Hillgrove (4-2) tried to continue their winning ways after a big victory over Marietta last weekend. Led by freshman QB Chase McCravy, Hillgrove is 4-1 in their last 5 games, but he’ll have to play his very best if they want to beat North Cobb (6-1), who hasn’t given up more than 20 points points since week one. Sophomore QB [player_tooltip player_id="34008" first="Malachi" last="Singleton"] is playing better and better, and he has SEC potential down the road.
