Sometimes, teams being underrated is due to the programs in which they have defeated, which ultimately inflates their record, or even the lack of attention that their region may draw. Regardless of what the reason may be, plenty of teams still find ways to show out, and put together a strong season. One of those programs happens to be Coffee Football. Coffee High School, who is currently 7-2, is nearing the end of their regular season, and is looking to take it to take the next step with a playoff opportunity. This season, they have only sustained losses against Houston County, and Ware County. Teams that Coffee has defeated includes that of Drew, Bainbridge, Glynn Academy, Camden County, SSalem, Wayne County, and Veterans High. Their biggest test of this season comes this weekend as they go on to challenge Warner Robins High.
Perhaps one of the biggest strengths to this team’s underrated success, has been the outstanding performance by the team’s defense. In total, the team has totaled 15 sacks this season, with players such as Jalell Graves, Cameron High, Brandon High, Zyshon Reed, Parker Hines, and many more contributing. With this, the defense has been consistent with making key stops, and holding opposing offenses to limited points. Anthony Gaskin, Jacob Lindsey, Trejan Landers, and Brandon High have each contributed, as each have totaled more than 60 tackles this season. In the secondary, the Trojans have also seen success, as there has been 6 interceptions so far this season. Brian Colbert, Travaris Jackson, and Aries Mcrae are responsible for this, with Colbert leading the team with 3 interceptions on his own.
The offensive side of the ball has also seen its fair share of success as well, with AJ Wilkerson, leading the team with almost 1,200 passing yards so far this season. He has also thrown 12 TD’s, to only 3 interceptions. Through the air, players such as Maurice Turner, Kenneth Davis, Trent Davis, and Zay Simpson reaping the benefits of Wilkerson’s success. Don’t let the success in the air fool you though, because the Trojans have also seen a ton of underrated success on the ground as well. To this point, 3 players have totaled over, or almost over, 400 rushing yards this season. Player such as AJ Franklin, who has rushed for over 400 yards, Wilkerson, and Brady Skipper have seen tons of success toting the rock, and have scored plenty of times as well. Wilkerson and and Franklin lead the pack as they each have 6 rushing TD’s.
While there are plenty of questions to be answered about how good Coffee’s football program really is, one can assume that plenty of answers will be provided in their match up this coming Friday. Only then will we be able to truly gauge how well they can compete against some of the best teams in the entire state of Georgia. Tune in with us to see!
