Andover Shuts Down St. Francis: Game Summary
ANDOVER– I dropped into double coverage on Holloween and covered two games as I started my afternoon in Andover. Check out my game notes on how Andover was able to bite hard on their rival, the St. Francis Saints, in shutout fashion.
FIRST QUARTER
I thought we would have a closer battle with the first quarter than it turned out to be. Andover QB Connor Develice hit a big pass to WR Sam Musungu, which set up the first big drive for the Huskies into Saints territory. A notable play from the first quarter was with the Huskies threatening in the Saints’ Redzone, St. Francis DB Gavin McCoy picked off a Connor Develice pass in the end zone forcing a new drive for the Saints getting set up on their 20-yard line. Andover would strike out yet again on their ensuing drive in the Redzone as Develice overthrew his intended receiver in the end zone. However, the momentum would pick up at the end of the quarter for Andover. The Saints graduated South Dakota State product Hunter Dustman Hunter Dustman K St. Francis | 2020 State MN last season and encountered some punting woes yesterday. They punted deep in their own territory and caused Andover to start the second quarter with an excellent field position.
SECOND QUARTER
Within a few seconds, Andover had the ball in the RedZone as RB Caden Wheeler punched in for a 1 yard gain. Andover 7, St. Francis 0. We got more defense from the Huskies after this momentum shift, as on the next drive, DB Weston Knox was able to grab his first of two INTs on the day off of QB Dakota Pennebaker of St. Francis. With the Huskies with the ball, they drove down the field again but were met with another turnover on downs after two dropped passes in the end zone, which didn’t help, but they still scored the bulk of their points in this quarter. DB Kollin Weikel was centimeters off from getting pick-six off of Pennebaker, who struggled on Saturday afternoon with five turnovers. Scoring this time was QB Connor Develice making it 14 for the Huskies, and that’s when this game started to break open. Andover 14, St. Francis 0. On the next drive, Weston Knox got INT number two and took for about 30 yards down deep into Saints territory. The Huskies then spread the love to someone else, with their touchdown, this time being to RB Aghogho Eyafe Aghogho Eyafe WR Andover | 2021 State MN , which would take the score into halftime. Andover 21, St. Francis 0. The Huskies almost eyed up another touchdown as DE Justin Kenning got a sack and forced a fumble in St. Francis territory.
THIRD QUARTER
The Huskies got the ball in the third quarter, and Connor Develice was able to sling one to Ethan Guerra to get the ball down to the Saints 7-yard line. If there’s one thing Andover works on this week, it’s making the best of those red zone opportunities as they again on this drive missed on 4th down, causing a turnover. After a St. Francis 3 and out, the Saints punted to Andrew Schumacher, who took the ball about 63 yards for an Andover touchdown on the punt return. XP was no good. Andover 27, St. Francis 0. St. Francis was able to probably put their best drive of the day at the end of the 3rd quarter but turned the ball over on a critical fourth-down play by Kollin Weikel and Nick Feine.
FOURTH QUARTER
I have to hand it to the Huskies, who were scoring yesterday was by six different players. Around the 8:00 minute mark, Develice got his second total touchdown on the day as he found WR Calvin Foy for 47 yards to the house. Andover 34, St. Francis 0. Then around the 5-minute mark, the Huskies saw they’re running back of the future in junior Logan Myers take four carries for 34 yards and one 24 yard run for the final scoring of the game in this blowout in Andover. Andover 41, St. Francis 0. Final.
